In sum, true-acupuncture (TA) was found to be superior to the sham-acupuncture (SA) in improving motor recovery and neurological deficits post-stroke.

Limitations? Small group (56 patients), short study (only 2 weeks), and all patients received standard rehab in addition to true/sham acupuncture.

My take: I've been treating post-stroke patients since I was an intern almost 20 years ago. The sooner a patient can come in for acupuncture, the better the results. (Acupuncture can also help improve mood, which is always affected by such a traumatic medical event.)

This randomized controlled trial found the true-acupoint (TA) intervention to be superior to the sham-acupoint (SA) intervention in improving motor recovery and neurological deficits post-stroke. TA ...

The clinic is cool and dry and clean... yet warm. ;)

There are spots open this afternoon if you'd like a "reset" before the weekend!

Themes of the week: arthritic fingers, limb swelling, headaches due to pressure changes in the weather, late spring allergies, and neck and shoulder tension. And always, anxiety.

We can help with all of it!

Since it's behind a paywall, here's the intro:

"A needle prick doesn’t seem like it should quiet severe pain. But in some cases, it does—easing migraines, dulling pain, even helping patients endure childbirth. In one randomized trial in emergency settings, acupuncture relieved acute pain more quickly and effectively than intravenous morphine, with fewer side effects.

Acupuncture, a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has long occupied a gray zone between medicine and mystery: widely used to treat pain, yet often dismissed as a placebo.

But advances in imaging and clinical research are shifting that view. Scientists are uncovering how a needle can trigger a chain reaction inside the body, activating immune cells, releasing pain-modulating chemicals, and altering brain activity. What’s emerging is a clearer picture of a measurable, body-wide response—one that is helping position acupuncture as a low-cost, non-addictive option in pain management worldwide."

Your body has a built-in painkiller system. Acupuncture may switch it on.

In order to assure the clinic’s continued high-volume access to care, treatments will increase to $35 starting June 1st.

Low overhead + high volume is our recipe, and keeping overhead low has been tricky this past year. We are increasing the price by $5 in order to meet expenses that have spiked to inflation. My original message was full of detailed griping, but after a long walk, I realized that no one needs a list to understand this reality.

LACA does not rely on government funding or grants. We're a small, financially self-sustaining model — dependent on locals who want acupuncture. Basically, we need you to come get poked in order for the clinic to stay alive. If this increase is something you can’t swing, please don’t stop coming for acupuncture. Instead, email us at acupuncturemaine@gmail and we’ll figure it out together.
