Twenty years ago today, at just 16 years old, Matthew Jernigan began working at Davidson Funeral Home. What started with a teenager willing to learn, help wherever needed, and follow the example of those around him has grown into a career devoted to serving families and carrying forward a legacy that means so much to him.
Funeral service was never unfamiliar to Matthew. He grew up around Davidson Funeral Home and had the privilege of watching his grandfather, Larry D. Morrison, serve families and lead by example. But some of the most important lessons came not from what was said, but from what he witnessed, the importance of showing up, treating every family with compassion regardless of circumstance, doing things the right way even when no one is watching, and remembering that the opportunity to serve someone during one of life's most difficult moments is a privilege that should never be taken for granted.
Over the past 20 years, Matthew has grown from that 16-year-old young man into a funeral director and co-owner of Davidson Funeral Home alongside the Briggs family. While the responsibilities have changed through the years, his desire has remained the same: to honor those who came before him while ensuring Davidson Funeral Home continues to be worthy of the trust families have placed in us for generations.
As important as funeral service is to Matthew, it does not define who he is. His faith in Christ is the foundation of his life and shapes the way he strives to serve, lead, and care for others. And from the very first day of these 20 years, his wife Chelsea has been by his side. She has shared the journey from a 16-year-old just beginning to learn the profession to where life has taken them today. Together, they are raising their two boys, who are among their greatest blessings. Whether at church, the baseball field, the racetrack, or simply spending time together, faith and family remain at the center of Matthew's life.
Today, we celebrate 20 years, not simply for the number of years worked, but for the families served, lessons learned, relationships built, and the responsibility of carrying forward something much bigger than any one person.
