Smell loss has been linked to several conditions, including Alzheimer’s.

It’s still not clear whether it is a cause, an early warning sign of trouble brewing, or a consequence of disease, but some researchers believe that the brain’s memory centres may depend on olfactory stimulation to stay healthy. For instance, covid-19 and other respiratory infections that disrupt smell have been linked with an increased risk of memory decline in older adults.

In this episode of Change Your Mind, presenters Helen Thomson and Cat de Lange explore the link between smell loss and memory with Michael Leon at UC Irvine. They discover how training your sense of smell - even while you sleep - may help keep memory centres active, and potentially slow some aspects of cognitive decline.
