Dr. Simon Fung Cornea & Anterior Eye Specialist at UCSF Ophthalmology

As a young boy born and raised in Hong Kong, Simon witnessed at first hand the effects of corneal blindness when his grandmother lost her sight. He subsequently completed his studies England, earning dual degrees at the University of Oxford in Physiological Sciences as well as in Medicine & Surgery. After his internship in Medicine in the Oxford Deanery, he moved to London for his residency based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and was appointed the 2013/14 Moorfields Chief Resident. Having acquired the sub-specialist knowledge and skills in adult cornea and anterior segment at a Fellow in London, he followed his passion in pediatrics, and traveled to Toronto to undertake a second fellowship in Pediatric Cornea and External Diseases at The Hospital for Sick Children – the only dedicated fellowship in this subspecialty in the world. Over his career, he performed over 1500 procedures, including in children with complex cornea and anterior segment conditions. He is experienced in teaching and clinical research, and has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and given presentations at conferences both in US and in Europe. It is his ambition to not only provide the best care for children affected by corneal and anterior segment diseases, but also advance our understanding and championing innovation in this field.

Somewhere between the talks, expert discussions, the old city, Caribbean light and conversations that carried on long after the sessions ended… Cartagena left an impression. �

A wonderful few days sharing and exchanging perspectives across pediatric cataract, glaucoma, cornea and ocular surface disease — with the best sessions often feeling less like lectures and more like conversations among colleagues.

I am so fortunate that ophthalmology has taken me to so many corners of the world — to experience places I might otherwise never see, and more importantly, to meet so many incredible people along the way. It’s something I’ll never take for granted.

Thank you for the invitation, the conversations, and above all the extraordinary Colombian warmth and hospitality.

Ophthalmology takes us places. The people make the journey.

Somewhere between the talks, expert discussions, the old city, Caribbean light and conversations that carried on long after the sessions ended… Cartagena left an impression. �

Original post by : t the end of last year, Orbis Volunteer faculty Dr. Donny Suh (), Dr. Ghalib Mukadam, and Dr. Simon Fung, alongside Orbis staff nurse Liu Xiao Ying, delivered a training project on pediatric strabismus at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, bringing hands-on learning directly to local teams.

With guidance from the team of world-renowned experts:
� 3 ophthalmologists, 2 anesthesiologists, and 2 nurses/technicians received expert training
� 6 observers joined from other hospitals
� 35 children were examined for strabismus, with 23 receiving treatment

By training local eye care professionals where they work, we help ensure more children receive timely, high-quality care, now and into the future.
