Josephine "Jo" Ferguson Burks

Josephine Ferguson Burks, 96, of Rustburg, VA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2026. She was the wife of the late Dallas Burks.

She was the daughter of the late Luther and Ola Ferguson. Jo retired from the United State Postal Service after having served as a rural carrier for the Evington Post Office for many years. She was an artist.

She is survived by her three children, Danny Burks, Timmy Burks and Cindy Burks; five grandchildren, Jenni, Cammie, Dallas, Paige and Madison; nine great grandchildren; and one brother, Gary Ferguson and one sister, Doris Kinsler.

Memorial contributions may be made to your local fire and rescue department.

A service will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. in the Fort Hill Memorial Park Chapel.

Robert Henderson Helvey, Jr.

Robert Henderson Helvey, Jr. 83, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away Monday, August 24, 2026, at CENTRA Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia Diane Helvey.

Born August 31, 1942, in Radford, VA, he was a son of the late Robert Henderson Helvey, Sr. and Sallie Rhodes Helvey. He was also preceded in death by a son Tracy Glenn Helvey and two brothers, Charles Helvey and Richard Helvey. He retired from Archer Creek Foundry (Lynchburg Foundry) as a maintenance supervisor after many years of service. He later retired from his second career with Lynchburg-Stained Glass. He was of the Methodist faith.

Robert is survived by his wife Diane Helvey; his daughter, Melanie Kirkpatrick and her husband, Michael and two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. in Virginia Memorial Park Chapel with Rev. Irvine Reynolds officiating.

Donald Lee Dawson

Donald Lee Dawson, 80, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at his home. He was the husband of Judith Fitzgerald Dawson.

Born June 7, 1946, in Lynchburg, VA, he was a son of the late Norman and Florence Dawson. He retired as an accountability supervisor with BWXT Nuclear Fuels. Donald honorably served in the United State Army.

In addition to his wife Judith, he is survived by his son, Jon Dawson and his wife, Sacha, of Orlando, FL; his daughter, Angela Henderson of Lynchburg, VA; two brothers, Wesley Dawson and his wife, Sharon, of Charlotte, NC and Randall Dawson and his wife Debbie, of Richmond, VA' his sister, Patricia Harvey of Charlotte, NC; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with Rev. Fred Williams officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service during a visitation and reception at the funeral home.

Phyllis Marie Hostetter Bruce

Phyllis Marie Hostetter Bruce, 80, of Forest, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, August 8, 2026. She was surrounded by the love of her devoted daughter and cherished companion.

Born on March 2, 1946, in Glen Wilton, Virginia, Phyllis lived a life marked by faith, service, kindness and dedication to her family and community. She was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend whose gentle spirit touched the lives of many.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard L. “Rick” Bruce, her son Jeffrey “Jeff” Blake Hannell, her parents Claude and Lettie Hostetter; her sisters Betty H. Story and Marilyn H. Matthews and husband, Robert; her brother, Maxwell C. Hostetter; and nephew, Maxwell C. Hostetter, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Teri L. Hannell of Lynchburg, Virginia and granddaughter, Morgan B. Hannell of Washington, D.C.; daughter-in-law Lisa B. Hannell of Lynchburg, Virginia; daughter Kelli B. Aud and husband Mike of Chesterfield, Virginia; Lance Bruce and wife Tracy of Sneads Ferry, NC and grandchildren Carson A. Craun, Landon A. Holloway, Ryan Aud and Jake Bruce. She is also survived by her sisters, Judy H. Campbell of Amherst, Virginia; Linda H. Baber of Waynesboro, Virginia; Wilma H. Reith of Parma, Ohio; and Trudy H. Beard and husband George of Madison Heights, Virginia, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Phyllis retired from AREVA/Framatome following a distinguished 25-year career. During her tenure, she served as an officer and leader on numerous professional committees and boards, including the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA), Nuclear Information and Records Management Association (NIRMA), American Society of Quality Control Standards Committee (ASQC) and the Association for Information and Image Management Engineering Systems Special Interest Group (AIIM).

A lifelong learner, Phyllis earned degrees from Mary Baldwin College, the University of Kansas, and the Institute of Certified Records Managers. Her commitment to excellence and professional development earned the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout her career. In July 2024, she achieved lifetime certification as a Certified Records Manager (CRM), a testament to her enduring dedication to her profession.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Phyllis was deeply committed to serving others. She volunteered with the Salvation Army, was an active member and officer of the John Lynch Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Lynchburg, Virginia, and dedicated her time to the Reading Depot Literacy Group in Bedford, Virginia.

Faith was the cornerstone of Phyllis’s life. A devoted Episcopalian, she faithfully served on the vestries of St. Stephens’s Episcopal Church in Forest, Virginia; All Saints Episcopal Church in New London, Virginia; and St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, North Carolina.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina held a special place in Phyllis’s heart, especially Pirate’s Cove in Manteo, where she and her beloved husband, Rick, built many treasured memories together. Their life near the water brought them great joy, from the beauty and ease of beach living to the salt air, peaceful views, and time spent along the coast.

Phyllis also had a special affection for Yorkshire Terriers. Over the years, Maggie and Moe, Abbi and Bo, and Teddy brought her great joy and companionship and held a special place in her heart.

Those who knew Phyllis will remember her for her quiet strength, intelligence, generosity and unwavering kindness. She had a special gift for making others feel valued and loved. Her gentle nature, warm heart and steadfast faith will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all those whose lives she touched.

Her legacy of love, service and compassion will continue to inspire her family and friends for generations to come.

A memorial service will be held, Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 1:00pm, at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1695 Perrowville Road, Forest, Virginia 24551. The family will receive friends in the Parrish Hall immediately following the service.

William Perroneau Fielder, III

William Perroneau Fielder III November 18th, 1975 - August 13th, 2026 William Perroneau Fielder, III, of Lynchburg, Virginia. passed away Thursday, August 13, 2026, at his home. Born November 18, 1975, in Appomattox, Virginia, he was the son of the late William Perroneau Fielder and Vicky Diane Smith Fielder. William worked for VP&J as a Direct Support Professional in Appomattox, Virginia. Mr. Fielder was a diligent, caring man and was loved by everyone who met him, but especially those whom he was charged with caring for. He had a natural desire to give, and a kind, selfless soul. Despite his own disabilities, he was always there to give a helping hand. William was a member of the Faith Alliance Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. Each and every member of this church was like family to him, and he loved them dearly. He is a man of God who worshipped the Lord daily and instilled those values in his family and life. William was the loving husband of Barbara Ann Fielder for 31 years. He and Barbara are each other's best friends and leaned on each other in times of need. He loved traveling with her; they went on trips to Graceland, Smith Mountain Lake, Natural Bridge, and Walton’s Mountain. The two were inseparable since the day they met. In addition to his wife, Barbara Fielder, William was survived by three daughters, Charity Fielder, Hope Elliott, and Faith Fielder; five grandchildren, Calliana Hasson (8), Caylan Hasson (6), Lesley Lange (4), Philip Elliott (7), and Langdyn Elliott (4). He is also survived by: Calliana and Caylan’s father, Caleb Hasson, Lesley’s father, Matt Lange, William’s son-in-law, Justyn Elliott, and Faith’s fiancé, Matthew Carrera. Also, his two cats Nyu and Sadie Fielder. William was very present in his daughters' and grandkids' lives. He loved making fun experiences for them, like taking them camping and to Kings Dominion. He loved celebrating holidays and birthdays with his whole family every year: gifting flowers and chocolates on Valentine’s Day, hosting Easter egg hunts, having a costume for Halloween, providing an abundance of food on the table for Thanksgiving, and dressing up as Santa for Christmas. He attended all of his grandkids’ events like field trips, field days, violin recitals, and graduations. An artistic soul, he often expressed himself through the creation of art, whether that be drawing pictures for his wife or designing his own cover art on DVDs and CDs. He loved watching movies and TV shows, his favorites being: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Back to the Future, The Goonies, Gremlins, StarTrek, WWE Wrestling, The Dukes of Hazzard, and The Crow. He had a great taste in music, artists like Tom Petty and Neil Diamond. 96.3 ROV Rocks radio station was always playing in his car. He had a passion for magic tricks, which was passed down from his father performing for kids. An owner of many retro video game consoles, he enjoyed playing games by himself and with others, he was notorious for winning all the time. A celebration of William’s life will be held Sunday, August 23rd, 2026 at Faith Alliance Church, 7808 Timberlake Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502, at 4 P.M., officiated by Pastor Yossi. Philip Earl Crist

"Boogie"

Philip Earl Crist, 82, affectionately known as Boogie, passed away August 10, 2026. He was the son of the late Carl Leon Crist and Helen Thoms Viar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Aubrey Leon Crist.

Philip served his country in the Army National Guard. He was a Master Electrician. He started his own business, Crist Electrical Contractor, in 1972, doing residential and commercial work and building it up to one of the largest electrical contractors in Central Virginia. He retired after 40 years. He had a passion for horses and was very competitive at horse shows around the country. He loved his farm, where he raised cattle and spent the summers cutting hay. His greatest joy was his grandchildren—watching them grow, achieve their dreams, and attending all their sports events.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 60 years, Barbara Walker Crist; sister Joan Crist Schmitt and husband Jimmy; his three sons John Andrew Crist (Rebecca), James Steven Crist (Kim), and Jason Scott Crist (Leslie); his grandchildren Lauren Crist Wilson (Mike), Sarah Crist Parsons (Wil), Ryan Steven Crist (Billie), and Matthew Walker Crist (Taylor); his great-grandchildren Clayton Lane Wilson, Walker Samuel Parsons, Tate William Parsons, Ross Michael Wilson, Reese Steven Crist, and Campbell Cate Parsons; and his nieces and nephews Gary Campbell, Kevin Schmitt, Greg Schmitt, Tim Crist, Katherine Mallory, James Walker Jr., and Douglas Walker.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. at Virginia Memorial Park with Rev. Dan G. Mason officiating.

Joseph Donald Younger

Joseph “Donald” Younger, age 84 of Lynchburg passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Gueggenheimer Health & Rehab.

Born July 24, 1942, he was the son of the late Jospeh A. and Katherine P. Younger. He is survived by two sisters, Cynthia Metcalf of Rustburg, Dana Kinsley of Jarratt, VA, and one brother Ted P. Younger. He is further survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a graduate of Rustburg High School and served in the U.S. Airforce for 4 years. He then went to work for Piedmont Airlines at the Lynchburg Airport. After a workplace accident in 1968, he was no longer able to work.

He was an avid fan of the Washington Commanders football team and NASCAR, especially Chase Elliot.

He attended Centenary United Methodist Church and was actively involved in many events there. He also enjoyed going on Missionary Trips with other church members.

There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday August 8, 2026, at Centenary United Methodist Church at 11:00 A.M.

Glen Edward Shrewsbury, Sr.

On Sunday, August 2, 2026, Glen Edward Shrewsbury, Sr. became absent from his earthly body and present with his Savior, Jesus Christ, whom he had faithfully served and witnessed about to others with his beautiful walking stick that he called his "Witness Stick". He always told people, “God made it and I cut it.”

God took him suddenly from 884 Turkey Foot Rd. where he had lived for over 61 years with his wife and best friend Brenda Eggers Shrewsbury. This is the home where they raised their 3 sons, Glen Edward Shrewsbury, II (Serena), George Allen Shrewsbury (Renee), and Matthew Scott Shrewsbury (Britney). There he made forever loving memories with his grandchildren, Justin Wilson (Michelle), Elena Renee Jones (Michael) and their son Branson, Dale Shrewsbury (Shyanne) and their daughter Kinsley, Wendy, Josh, and Matthew Viar, Tucker Shrewsbury (Hailey), Will, Noah, and Hannah Shrewsbury, Zachery Everett and friend Hailee May, 6 great grandchildren, and special daughter Emily High Hogge (John) and their sons.

Glen was raised on a farm in Stephenson, West Virginia by his father George Edward Shrewsbury and mother Mary Elizabeth Shrewsbury. He was the tenth of 12 children. Glen graduated from Mullins High School and McClain's Business College in Bluefield, West Virginia with an accounting degree which brought him to Forest, VA in 1960 to work for his brother-in-law Guy Cooper’s (Latha) accounting business. In 1964 he went to work at Virginia Gear in Lynchburg, VA. (now Flowserve). He retired from there in 2015 after 51 years.

Glen had many areas of interest. He loved the great outdoors, enjoying creation to its fullest, and running the back sweep in the James River Batteau Festival for 18 years. On the 3 batteaux that he helped build in the backyard of his Turkey Foot Rd home, he, Brenda and their family enjoyed participating in the batteau festival and other historical reenactments. There they met many lifelong friends. Glen is survived by 1 brother, Clyde Shrewsbury of Staunton, VA and 2 sisters, Ruth Fox (Kenneth) of Sophia, West Virginia, and Rubie Burcham of Berryville, VA and many special nieces, nephews and their families of whom he dearly loved. Glen was proceeded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers-in-law, Latha Cooper (Guy), Nettie Chester (John), Mabel, Thelma Halsey (Ivan), Pauline Archer (James) and brothers Francis, Roy (Phyllis) and Albert Shrewsbury, and nephews Bobby and Guy Charles Cooper and a very special niece-in-law Sandra Garrison.

A celebration of Glen’s life will be held on Friday August 7, at Timberlake Christian Church

Doris Litty Albertson

Doris Albertson was born on December 4th, 1931 in Yonkers, New York to Martin and Marta (Zoerner) Litty. She had one brother, Fred Dietrich Litty (1930–2014), and one sister, Rosemarie Charlotte Litty Albright (1928–2008). Her family emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1930, but returned to Germany in 1935 due to Doris’s mother’s difficulty in acclimating to living in crowded apartments during the hot, humid New York City summers. Furthermore, she greatly missed her siblings in Berlin, Germany, and speaking no English, she was unable to communicate with neighbors and church people. No one could have foreseen that in just four short years later the family would be caught up in the throes of WWII. Doris’s father was drafted by the German army in 1941 and was sent to the Russian front. Doris, her mother, and siblings remained living in their four-story apartment house in Lankwitz, one of the suburbs of Berlin.

On August 23rd, 1943, Lankwitz was the target of a brutal bombing attack during which 95% of the suburb was leveled to the ground. The first miracle of the night was the fact that no one in Doris’s family was trapped under the debris nor did they sustain any serious injuries. The second miracle of the night was that they were able to safely exit the totally destroyed burning building, while the next-door neighbors had no escape and consequently perished. Doris and her family now had to depend on friends and family members to house all four of them, usually in one spare room. Thus, they survived two more years of war including Russian occupation.

In May of 1945, the war ended and the family was miraculously reunited in West Berlin. Doris returned to the U.S. in 1946, and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, N.Y. in 1949. While saving up money to enter nursing school, Doris worked briefly as a nanny for Gloria Vanderbilt, caring for her 15-month-old son. In 1955 she earned her diploma as a registered nurse and worked for the next nine years mostly with pediatric patients.

Doris’s own spiritual growth began when she responded one Sunday evening to a Gospel message given via an object lesson. There was no invitation given and no counseling offered in this Exclusive Plymouth Brethren Assembly, which met in a makeshift storefront church, but Doris remembered clearly kneeling at her bedside that night, admitting to God that she was one of the sinners for whom Jesus died and rose again and invited Jesus into her heart and life. To her amazement she learned the next morning that her brother had also made the same decision by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Both were baptized in the Long Island Sound.

In 1964, while attending Houghton College, she became aware of the spiritual needs of children and attended the three-month Child Evangelism Fellowship Institute. She was then asked to start the ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship in New York City. This is where she met Elmer Albertson. They were married in 1966 and both devoted their lives to living by faith, in order to train men and women and teenagers how to reach thousands of children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The ministry led them from Staten Island, N.Y. to Hackensack, N.J. and Pennsylvania until they retired and moved to Lynchburg, VA in 2003.

Doris passed away in the early morning of July 31, 2026 with her son by her side. Doris is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Elmer A. Albertson, and their only son, Timothy, who is a graduate of Liberty University and resides in Forest, VA, and by her three grandchildren, Kyle Mummau (Hannah), Alisha Mummau Peterson (Zachary), and Aaron Mummau, and two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by a first cousin, Dr. M. Frank Litty, with whom she was very close, who currently resides in Albany, NY with his wife Michele.

A visitation and reception will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon followed by a celebration of her life at 12:00 pm at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with Pastor Rod Kidd officiating. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her memory be sent to Heritage Baptist Church, 219 Breezewood Dr, Lynchburg, VA 24502.

William David Wilson, Sr.

William "David" Wilson, 83, of Forest VA, gained his wings on Tuesday, July 29th, in the home he loved so much, around 11 am. He was born on November 2nd, 1942, to the late Vera Bryant Wilson Harrell and William Wallace Wilson in Forest, at his "Home-place". David graduated from New London Academy in 1961, and never veered far away from home or the wonderful view of the mountains, he loved so much.

David always had a love of animals, whether on the farm he devoted so much time to, or his favorite cats,dogs and chickens, he had all his life. He also had a passion for car restoration, and machinery, as a devoted employee of Flowserve/Limitorque for over 49 years, before his retirement. David helped his son, Willie, start up a online company after his retirement, which also helped other car hobbyist, as they restored vintage parts, up till the day he died. David said there was no short cut to quality and tried to treat each person's parts, like they were going on his own car.

David was also a skilled carpenter, as he helped his son build the kitchen cabinets and table for his home from scratch, a skill he learned early in life, on the farm. David also was willing to lend a hand to any neighbors that needed help with any project and had a heart of gold giving monies to all sorts of charities over the years.

David is survived by his loving wife, Gail Simpson Wilson and his son, William D Wilson JR, all of Forest. Also surviving are his sister's, Virginia Wilson Bryant, and Janie Keys(Aubrey), both from Lynchburg. Also, proceeding him in death were sisters-Dora, Violet, Ruby and Lillie.

Per his request, there will only be a grave side service on Tuesday August 4th at 11AM at Spring Hill Cemetery, in Lynchburg, open to the public. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bedford County Animal Shelter.
