Stay in the Game- Prevent Sports Injuries Before They Start!

One of the best athletic abilities is availability. Athletes of all ages and sports push their body to the limits, and avoiding injuries is crucial to staying in tippy-top performance. Different tasks have different demands on the body, but there’s a few universals to decrease injury risk across the board:

1 Avoid early sports specialization: playing multiple sports helps reduce overuse injuries and builds more well-rounded athletes.
2 Train year-round, not just during the season: use it or lose it! Strength, mobility, and conditioning matter all year long.
3 Progress gradually: “too much, too fast” is one of the biggest causes of injury.
4 Prioritize recovery: sleep and rest are essential for healing, performance, and injury prevention.
5 Strength train appropriately: stronger muscles help support and protect joints and tissues.
6 Stay hydrated and properly fueled: nutrition and hydration directly impact performance and recovery.
7 Never skip your warm-up: dynamic warm-ups prepare your muscles, joints, and nervous system for activity.

At John Goetze Physical Therapy, we help athletes of all ages move better, recover smarter, and stay healthy for the long haul. Our therapists have years of experience keeping them at the top of their game. We would love to be a part of your sports journey. Contact us today to stay healthy and active all season long!

National Arthritis Month: Understanding Arthritis & Medical Management

Arthritis isn’t just one condition- it’s an umbrella term for over 100 different joint conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and more. About 21% of the adult US population (over 50 million people!) have been diagnosed with and are living with some form of arthritis. Correct diagnosis and medical management requires the expertise of a physician, but here’s an overview of arthritis: what causes it and how to manage it.

Osteoarthritis is not your joints “breaking down” beyond repair. Age does play a role, but arthritis is not simply “wear and tear”. Common causes of arthritis include:
- Normal age related changes.
- Autoimmune conditions.
- Prior injury or trauma.
- Genetic predisposition and body weight.
- Muscle weakness and poor joint support.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, most often affecting the knees, hips, hands, spine, and shoulders. The good news? Osteoarthritis is manageable. Many people live active, fulfilling lives with it. Treatments include a variety of approaches including oral medication, injections, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, or sometimes surgery.

Physical therapy is a first-line, evidence based treatment for many types of arthritis. Most physicians encourage PT before considering other options. To quote one of our therapists, Noah- “PT is relatively cheap and available, with pretty much no side effects”. At JGPT, we recognize that every person is an individual: there are innumerable biological, psychological, and contextual variables that play a role in a person’s experience of arthritis. We also recognize that different people have different goals for treatment. Research supports the role of physical therapy as an alternative to, or in complement to surgery. In some populations, outcomes with conservative management can be just as effective as joint replacement for improving quality of life and physical function.

Conservative care, including PT, is strongly recommended before considering surgery. If after some time things just aren’t getting better, sometimes surgery might be the best choice for improving physical ability. We always recommend discussing with and getting a surgeon’s opinion, but ultimately this comes down to your (the patient’s) choice. If you decide surgery is the best option for you, pre- and post-operative physical therapy improves outcomes after joint replacement and reduces long-term disability.

At John Goetze Physical Therapy, we work with you and your medical team to create a personalized plan. Whether your goal is to manage arthritis conservatively or prepare for and recover from surgery, our team is here to support you.

After a car accident, even a “minor” one, your body absorbs a surprising amount of force. The good news? Physical therapy can help reduce pain, restore movement, and get you back to your normal routine safely.

Here’s how physical therapy can help:
1) Reduce pain and inflammation: Gentle movement, manual therapy, and targeted exercises improve circulation, decrease muscle guarding, and calm irritated tissues.
2) Rebuild strength: After an accident, certain muscles “shut down” while others overcompensate. A structured rehab plan restores balance, improves posture, and protects your spine and joints.
3) Prevent chronic pain: Early care often means faster recovery and fewer long-term issues.
4) Improve confidence: After a crash, many people feel guarded or anxious about moving. Guided rehab helps you trust your body again and return to work, exercise, and daily life safely.

At John Goetze Physical Therapy here in Jacksonville, we provide individualized, evidence-based care focused on helping you heal and move confidently again. If you’ve recently been in an accident and just “don’t feel right,” let’s get you checked out. Call today to schedule an evaluation.
