Caravel Autism Health Caravel Autism Health helps young children with autism in Madison and surrounding areas through diagnosis and clinic-based ABA therapy. Better outcomes.

Our research-based programs build skills and connection. Evaluations offered in clinic or through telehealth. A leader in the field, Caravel Autism Health specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of very young children with autism spectrum disorder. Our research-based, data-driven programs help these children build skills and embrace new ways of connecting with the world. Caravel offers autism diagnostic evaluations in clinic or through telehealth and provides applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for children in a welcoming, clinic-based setting. Our services include autism testing, early intervention, communication and language skills, social skills, school readiness, daily living and self-help skills, toilet training, mealtime and eating support, support for reducing challenging behaviors and parent/caregiver training and coaching. Children receive one-to-one therapy in clinic alongside opportunities for peer interaction. When a skill is best learned in a real-world setting (for example, a morning routine at home, a trip to the grocery store, or a haircut or dental visit), our team works with each child in the places that matter most based on their individual treatment plan. Happier lives.

Getting through a dental appointment takes more skills than most people stop to think about. Sitting back in the chair, holding still, opening on request, tolerating bright lights and unfamiliar tools and someone's hands close to your face, and so many more.

Plenty of adults find that hard. For a lot of the children we work with, it's the difference between getting dental care and skipping it.

So we practice it in clinic. Teams break the appointment into small steps and work through them at the child's pace, in a space where there's no clock running and nothing is on the line.

Once a child is steady with those steps here, we help caregivers carry the same practice into the real appointment. We take the same approach with haircuts, doctor visits, and blood draws.

As school starts, therapy looks different for every family. πŸŽ’

For some children, this fall is a graduation. Goals met, skills holding, ready to move on.

For others, hours stay right where they are, because steady is exactly what's working.

And for some, hours fade gradually as school takes up more of the day, with clinic time shifting to match.

None of those is behind. They're just different points on the same path, and your clinical team builds the plan around where your child actually is.

If you're not sure which one this fall is for your family, your team can walk you through it. πŸ’™

August is Humanitarian Month at Caravel. πŸ’™

Every one of our clinics picks something that matters where they are. A goods drive, a service event, a donation push. Different neighborhoods, different needs, different projects.

We're ten days in and there's still plenty of month left.

If you want to pitch in, reach out to your local clinic. They'll tell you what they're collecting, when they're out in the community, and how you can help.

"Will she always need a reward to do this?" 🫧

Short answer: no.

When a skill is brand new, it gets a lot of support. Something she loves, right after she does the thing. Bubbles, a favorite toy, a big high-five.

As the skill gets stronger, that support fades back on purpose. Less often, more natural, until the skill holds up on its own because it's working for her.

The reward isn't the point. It's the skill. πŸ’™

The skills your child works on in therapy? They grow when you practice them out in the world too πŸ›’

Everyday outings are full of little chances, and they look different for every child:

βœ” Choosing a snack at the store, with words, a point, or an AAC device
βœ” Waving or saying hi to a familiar face
βœ” Taking a turn at the playground
βœ” Handing money or an item to the cashier
βœ” Exploring a new place with a trusted adult close by
βœ” Picking out a book at the library

No two kids do it the same way, and that's okay. You don't have to run a therapy session at the grocery store. Just knowing what to look for turns everyday errands into practice. πŸ’™

Growth doesn't always move in a straight line. And it doesn't have to.

We think of it more like a jungle gym than a ladder. Sometimes you climb. Sometimes you move sideways into a new specialty. Sometimes life calls for a step back. Sometimes you step off the clinical track entirely into operations, recruitment, or something you didn't expect.

For clinical growth specifically, we've mapped it out level by level. Our clinical pathway shows every role from Behavior Technician to leadership, with growth recognized and rewarded at each step, and expert supervision and mentorship to help you get there.

But that's just one track. Here, you're never stuck on a single path.

Wherever your path takes you, there's room for it here. We're hiring: https://pulse.ly/cqppsoepzr

National Night Out is today, and there's a good chance one is happening near you. Over 17,000 communities are taking part this year.

Identifying a trusted adult, asking for help, and staying with a caregiver in a crowded place are safety skills. Our clinicians teach them, break them down, and practice them with kids every day. But a skill isn't finished when a child can do it in session. It's finished when they can do it in a loud park with a stranger in a uniform.

That's what an event like this is good for. Low stakes, daylight, a parent right there, and no emergency happening. Meeting an officer on a Tuesday in August is how a child learns who to go to on a day when something's wrong.

A few things that help:
β€’ Show your child photos of officers, fire trucks, and squad cars before you go
β€’ Arrive early, before the crowd peaks
β€’ Ask before the lights or sirens go on
β€’ Pick your exit spot in advance. A short good visit beats a long hard one
β€’ Bring headphones or a preferred item

Find your local event through your city or police department page. Dates vary in some communities, so check before you go.

We're a first-time sponsor of the Eau Claire, WI event this year, and our team will be at Carson Park from 5:30 to 8. If you're local, come say hi.

This week in our Clinical Collective, we're welcoming back a guest we loved having the first time around.

Dr. Holly Gover returns on August 5th for "Prioritizing Assent and Choice when Addressing Food Selectivity: Assessment," the next session in her series on supporting children with food selectivity. This one focuses on assessment, using compassionate, evidence-based approaches that prioritize autonomy and choice.

The Clinical Collective is our guest speaker series created to support clinician growth, elevate clinical quality, and foster ongoing connection and learning across our teams. We're grateful for chances like this to keep strengthening the care we provide to children and families.

Thank you, Dr. Gover, for sharing your expertise with us again.
