The dollhouse isn’t just for pretend play🏡💬

One of the easiest ways to support language development is by modeling language during play!

Instead of quizzing your child with lots of questions, try describing what’s happening! When children hear language paired with actions and play, they’re learning new vocabulary, sentence structures, and ways to communicate. All without pressure!👏🏻

The best part? You don’t need special activities. Just join their play, follow their lead, and talk about what you see!

Rachel has been a speech therapist for 21 years! In addition to supervising our early intervention & preschool speech therapists, Rachel sees her own preschool caseload!

Think that bedtime story is just a way to wind down? Reading is a great opportunity to improve your child’s communication skills🚀

You don’t need a 30-minute lesson; you just need a few “language-first” strategies to turn those pages into progress!

How to Level Up Your Story Time:
🎵Use exaggerated inflection and a “sing-song” melody. Melodic speech captures a child’s attention much longer than a flat reading voice
✨Model short, 1-2 word phrases to make it easier for your little one to imitate you
🙌 Use signs, gestures, and big actions. If the character is jumping, you jump!
👯‍♀️ Involve siblings or peers! Peer modeling is incredibly powerful, and sometimes a child will mimic a big brother or sister faster than they will an adult

Consistency is KEY! Prioritizing even just 5 minutes a day can make a huge difference!

Quick Speech Tip: Mirror Play🗣️

Want a fun, face-to-face way to boost your child’s communication? Try mirror play!

Sit with your child in front of a mirror and make it playful:
😄Make silly faces
👅Stick out your tongue
💋Blow kisses
🗣️Practice simple sounds like “ma,” “ba,” or “oo!”

Watch together as your faces move! This helps your child become more aware of how their mouth, lips, and tongue work to make sounds. It’s a great way to build imitation skills, early speech sounds, and social connection💛

Keep it light, silly, and interactive. The goal is connection, not perfection!
