Fine lines and sun damage can look similar, but they don’t develop for the same reasons.

Fine lines are often linked to natural aging, collagen loss, repetitive facial movement, dehydration, and genetics. Sun damage, on the other hand, develops from cumulative UV exposure and can show up as dark spots, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, redness, and loss of elasticity.

The good news? Prevention and early treatment matter. Daily broad-spectrum SPF, a consistent skincare routine, and treatments tailored to your skin can help protect against future damage and improve existing concerns.

Healthy skin starts with understanding what you’re treating.

Sugar and skin are more connected than you might think.

When excess sugar binds to proteins in the body, it can form advanced glycation end products (AGEs). This process, known as glycation, can affect collagen and elastin—two proteins that help keep skin firm and resilient.

Over time, glycation may contribute to visible signs of skin aging, including decreased elasticity and wrinkles.

Skincare matters, but healthy skin is also influenced by what happens beneath the surface.

A balanced diet, daily sun protection, and evidence-based skincare all play a role in supporting long-term skin health.

For us, great dermatology goes beyond treating what’s visible. It’s about how we practice medicine every day.

We continue learning, follow evidence-based medicine, recommend only what we believe is appropriate, and create treatment plans based on each patient’s individual skin, lifestyle, and goals.

That also means knowing when to say, “You don’t need this,” performing thorough skin exams, prioritizing daily sun protection, and never choosing a treatment simply because it’s trending.

Because the foundation of good dermatologic care will always be trust, science, and putting the patient first.

A tan isn’t just a change in skin color; it involves the melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin.

When a product or peptide is designed to stimulate this pigmentation process, the effects may extend beyond the cosmetic result you’re looking for. Changes in existing moles, new or unusual pigmentation, and other systemic side effects are important reasons to approach these trends with caution.

Before trying a product that alters melanin production, talk with a board-certified dermatologist and make sure you understand the potential risks.

Your skin can react in very different ways, and knowing which one you're dealing with actually matters.

Some reactions show up fast and spread wide. Hives, swelling, itchiness that isn't tied to one specific spot. That's usually the immune system responding to something you were exposed to, and it can happen within minutes.

Other reactions stay exactly where the trigger touched you. A ring line. A watchband. The edge of a new detergent's contact point. These tend to show up more gradually, sometimes taking hours or even days to appear.

Here's what actually matters most: widespread hives paired with swelling of the lips or throat, or any trouble breathing, is a medical emergency and needs immediate attention.

Localized irritation from contact is uncomfortable, but it is not the same level of urgent.

Knowing the difference isn't just helpful. It's how you know when to wait it out and when to act fast.

MYTH: A good skincare routine needs a long list of expensive products.

The truth? Simple can be just as effective.

Ashley Llera, PA-C, keeps her morning routine focused on the essentials: gentle cleansing when needed, vitamin C for antioxidant support, a barrier-supporting moisturizer, and SPF 30+ every single day.

Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. The right ingredients, used consistently, can make all the difference.

Green flag or red flag: dermatologist edition.

Some skincare habits get Dr. Floss's approval, while others are an immediate no. And a few? It depends.

Watch to see how your routine holds up and let us know how many red flags you’re guilty of.
