Ever wonder why I ask about frequent ear infections during a speech evaluation?

Frequent ear infections can sometimes cause temporary hearing changes, meaning little ones may not hear speech as clearly or consistently. During the years when language is developing rapidly, that can make a difference.

Of course, not every late talker has a history of ear infections, and not every child with ear infections will have a speech delay or need ear tubes. But it's one of the many puzzle pieces I consider when evaluating a child's communication skills🧸🧩

As a speech therapist, oral rest posture and coordination are important pieces of a much bigger picture.

Nose blowing isn’t just a basic skill, it requires coordination of nasal breathing, lip closure, tongue positioning, and controlled airflow. When one piece isn’t working efficiently, you might notice open mouth posture, constant sniffing, or difficulty clearing their nose.

As a speech-language pathologist, I often hear families say they’ve been told to “wait and see.” Here’s why I take a different approach

Did you know where your tongue rests can affect sleep, breathing, eating, AND talking? 😮💤🍎🗣

✅ Proper oral rest posture – tongue suctioned to the upper palate, lips closed, teeth slightly apart supports:

Breathing – nasal breathing is optimal!
Speech clarity – tongue in the right spot = fewer compensations in connected speech
Feeding & drinking – proper tongue placement promotes efficient eating and drinking
Sleep quality – nasal breathing = more restorative rest

Kids who mouth breathe may seem extra energetic or restless. Chronic mouth breathing can trigger a fight-or-flight state during the day because their bodies aren’t getting proper oxygen while sleeping 🫁⚡
