d fostering lifelong independent living. Our practice is centered around Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), supported by a variety of approaches to family-centered care. ABA is a scientific discipline that examines the relationship between an individual’s environment and their behavior. It is a nationally recognized, evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. Starting the year with open and honest communication sets the foundation for a strong partnership between you, your learner, and their teacher. Don't be afraid to advocate for them loudly and often! 🧡

Grocery shopping with a sensory sensitive learner can feel overwhelming, but with a little preparation it can become a much smoother experience for the whole family! 💙

Here are some tips for your next trip to the store:
🛒 Shop when the store is less crowded and quieter, such as early mornings on weekdays
🛒 Create a visual shopping list with pictures so your learner knows what to expect and can feel involved in the process
🛒 Keep trips short at first and gradually build up to longer visits as your learner becomes more comfortable
🛒 Bring noise canceling headphones to help manage loud sounds and a comfort item/fidget toy to help your learner self regulate

A trip to the Detroit Zoo just got a whole lot more accessible! 🦁

On the second Monday of every month, the zoo offers sensory-friendly hours with adjusted lightning and reduced or muted sound in attractions. Sensory bags are also available and include noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, and weighted lap pads.
