Sometimes the difference between reacting and responding is only a few seconds.

When we react, our emotions can take the lead. We may say something quickly, shut down, become defensive, or make a decision before we’ve had time to process what we’re feeling.

When we respond, we give ourselves a little space to notice: What am I feeling? What is this bringing up for me? What do I actually want to do next?

Responding doesn’t mean you aren’t angry, hurt, frustrated, or overwhelmed. It means those feelings don’t have to make every decision for you.

A pause can look like taking a breath, stepping away for a moment, naming the emotion, or simply saying, “I need a minute before I respond.”

Are you in Louisiana and looking for a LPC-S for supervision?

I truly enjoy teaching and helping therapists as they begin their careers.

As an LPC-S with experience across multiple areas of mental health and private practice, I understand how important quality supervision is during those early years.

My goal is to provide a supportive space that helps develop confident, competent, and ethical counselors who feel prepared for the work they’re stepping into.

I’m currently accepting PLPCs in Louisiana for supervision.

If you’re looking for an LPC-S, let’s connect!

We hear the word narcissist so often that it can start to describe almost anyone who has hurt us, disappointed us, or handled a situation poorly.

But there’s a difference between someone displaying a hurtful or selfish behavior and someone having a consistent pattern of traits associated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Someone can be inconsiderate, emotionally immature, communicate poorly, make a really bad decision, or hurt you.

That doesn’t automatically make them a narcissist.

And here’s the important part: you don’t need to diagnose someone to acknowledge that their behavior hurt you or decide that you need a boundary.

Instead of always wondering if they a narcissist try asking:
Is this a pattern?
How does this relationship make me feel?
Are my boundaries being respected?
Is this relationship healthy for me?

It’s important to understand the pattern and deciding what you need.

You can be in a room full of people and still feel like you’re completely by yourself.

You can have people who love you, people who check on you, people who invite you places and still feel like something is missing.

Loneliness isn’t always about the number of people in your life. It can be be about not feeling known, understood, safe, or connected.

Maybe you’re tired of conversations that never go beneath the surface, you don’t feel comfortable showing people what you’re really feeling, or you’ve gotten so used to saying “I’m good” that you don’t even know what you’d say if someone asked how you really are.

That’s why sometimes you need a space where you can be honest about what you’ve been experiencing without having to minimize it.

That’s one of the things therapy can provide.

If you’ve been feeling disconnected lately, you don’t have to dismiss it just because you’re not physically alone.

Sometimes the things we do to protect ourselves become so familiar that we stop questioning them.

We call it being independent, prepared, a people pleaser or “just how I am.” But sometimes there is a story behind the way we respond to stress, conflict, disappointment, or vulnerability.

That doesn’t mean every habit is unhealthy or that you need to change everything about yourself. It simply means it can be worth getting curious about.

Where did I learn this?
What is this helping me avoid?
Do I still need this protection today?

If you’ve been noticing patterns in yourself that you don’t fully understand, therapy can give you a space to explore them without judgment.

5 signs you might need a place to talk:

• You’re constantly overwhelmed
• You keep everything to yourself
• Small things feel bigger than they used to
• You’re tired of always being the strong one
• You keep saying, “I’ll deal with it later.”

You may be functioning, but that doesn’t mean you’re okay.

You don’t have to wait until things get worse to ask for support. Sometimes you simply need a safe place to slow down, talk, and figure out what you need.

I wrote a little more about these five signs on the HJCC blog.

You keep saying you’re fine because explaining what’s actually wrong feels exhausting.

So you keep going. You show up to work. You answer the texts. You take care of everybody else. You laugh when you’re supposed to laugh. And when someone asks how you’re doing, you say, “I’m good.”

But privately, you know you’re not.

Sometimes you don’t need someone to fix your life. You just need a safe place where you can finally say what you’ve been holding in without feeling judged, rushed, or told to “look on the bright side.”

That’s part of what therapy can offer.

At Healing Journey Counseling Center, our contracted therapists create space for you to talk, process, vent, and work through what’s been weighing on you. You don’t have to come in knowing exactly what you need or having the perfect words.

You can simply start where you are.

And if you’ve been thinking about therapy but keep putting it off, maybe this is your sign to stop putting yourself last.

New clients can book online. No phone call required.

When you’re carrying chronic stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or simply the weight of trying to hold everything together, your mental energy gets depleted. By the time someone asks, “What do you want for dinner?” or “Which one do you want?” it can feel like one decision too many.

This is often called decision fatigue.

It can look like:
• Feeling overwhelmed by simple choices.
• Putting off tasks because deciding feels exhausting.
• Saying, “I don’t care,” even when you actually do.
• Wishing someone else would just decide for you.

If you’ve been feeling mentally drained for a while, don’t ignore what your brain is trying to tell you. You deserve support before you reach complete burnout.

If this feels familiar, therapy can help you understand what’s contributing to the overload and help you regain the mental space to navigate life with more clarity.
