Northeast Kentucky AHEC The NEKY AHEC is one of eight regional centers in Kentucky that has a mission of enhancing access to quality health care in rural and underserved areas.

The Northeast AHEC serves a 17-county region of Northeastern Kentucky. This region, which sits at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, is in many ways an underserved area of the state. Fourteen of our seventeen counties are designated as Appalachian counties, Medically Underserved Areas (MUA) and/or Medically Underserved Populations (MUP). These counties include: Bath, Boyd, Carter, Clark,

Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lawrence, Lewis, Mason, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Nicholas, Powell, Robertson, Rowan.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, Northeast AHEC welcomed more than 200 nursing professionals, students, and local health resource representatives from across our 17-county service region for the 3rd Annual Regional Nursing Summit.

Throughout the day, attendees heard from speakers on a variety of important topics impacting the nursing profession. Sessions focused on recovery and relapse prevention, the role of the SANE nurse and improving care for patients who have experienced sexual assault, and preventative health strategies and early detection across the lifespan. The summit also featured keynote speaker Tena Barnes Carraher, co-founder and vice president of marketing and communications for the DAISY Foundation, who shared the impact that meaningful recognition can have on nurses.

In addition to the speaker sessions, attendees had the opportunity to connect with more than 15 organizations at resource tables offering career opportunities, continuing education information, and valuable community resources.

The 3rd Annual Regional Nursing Summit was a great day of learning, connection, and conversation for those involved in the nursing profession. Thank you to everyone who attended, presented, and supported the event, and we are already looking forward to another successful Nursing Summit in Fall 2027!

STEPS Applications for the 2026-2027 cohort are now open!!

Are you a college Junior or senior? Are you planning on taking the MCAT within the next year and apply to medical school?

The STEPS program is a great opportunity to help students navigate their journey to medical school!

STEP participants receive FREE MCAT prep and books, personal statement support from SWAY ESSAY, mock interviews, research opportunities, shadowing and volunteer experiences, and the chance to hear directly from medical schools and current medical students!

Last night, Northeast Kentucky AHEC hosted our annual Rural Health Scholars Program Celebratory Banquet, recognizing our high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates for their dedication and accomplishments throughout the program.

Students and their guests also heard from third-year KYCOM medical students Macen Witt and Anna Armstrong, who shared their inspiring journeys into health care and passion for serving rural Kentucky. Their stories encouraged our scholars as they continue pursuing careers that will make a difference in their communities.

We’re excited for another year of programming, connecting our scholars to various health careers, and can’t wait to see what our graduates accomplish!

We had an incredible day at the Appalachian ROOTS Oral Health Summit at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry! Students explored careers in dentistry through career panels, connected with current dental students, toured the College of Dentistry, and participated in hands-on activities to experience the field firsthand. It’s been a busy and rewarding few weeks at Northeast AHEC as we wrapped up two successful CHASE camps, reaching a total of 30 high school students!

Our first camp of the summer was held June 4–5 in Clark County in partnership with Centerpoint Health. Students explored a variety of healthcare careers through hospital tours, hands-on activities such as suturing, blood typing, and dissection, and a special visit from the AirEvac team, who flew in for a helicopter tour. We are especially grateful to begin this new partnership with Centerpoint Health and look forward to collaborating together more!

Our second camp took place June 11–12 in Mason County in partnership with PrimaryPlus. Students participated in hands-on healthcare activities, connected with healthcare professionals, toured PrimaryPlus facilities, explored career pathways, and gained valuable insight into the many opportunities available in the healthcare field. We are thankful for PrimaryPlus’s continued partnership and commitment to providing meaningful experiences for students in our region.

Interested in healthcare and want to learn more about careers in oral health? Join us for the Oral Health Summit on July 17, 2026 at the UK College of Dentistry! Attendees will have the opportunity to:

- Hear from guest speakers
- Tour the College of Dentistry
- Explore oral health careers
- Connect with other students interested in healthcare

Lunch is provided, participation is free, and students will receive a stipend!
