During Environmental Services (EVS) Week, we’re proud to recognize team members like Kwame Avery, who demonstrate how every role can be an opportunity to lead, grow and contribute to our mission. 💙

As a newly promoted EVS supervisor at 🏥 HCA Florida Memorial Hospital, Kwame helps create a clean, safe environment for patients, visitors and colleagues while bringing a passion for empowering others to his work each day.

“My favorite part of my role is being a leader who has the ability to inspire, encourage and educate,” Kwame says. “What I appreciate about working for HCA Florida Healthcare is that it gives me the opportunity for continuous professional development and a steady, day-by-day approach to learning. It is an excellent foundation for a fulfilling career.”

That drive to inspire others extends beyond the hospital. Outside of work, Kwame enjoys writing inspirational books and mentoring children through his church.

After three and a half years with HCA Healthcare, Kwame continues to grow his career while making a difference for those around him — showing how EVS can be a place to serve others, develop as a leader and build a meaningful career.

Today, we honor and remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and recognize the heroic efforts of the first responders and everyday citizens who acted with extraordinary bravery.

When Haley Prosser went into cardiac arrest following the birth of her daughter at a hospital in Pratt, Kansas, she was resuscitated, and a CT scan revealed a saddle pulmonary embolism — a life-threatening blood clot blocking blood flow through her heart. She needed a higher level of specialized care and was transferred to HCA Healthcare’s 🏥 Wesley Healthcare in Wichita, Kansas.

Before Haley arrived, Wesley Medical Center mobilized a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including critical care and interventional radiology. With Haley at risk of another cardiac arrest, the team determined that venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) could support her heart and circulation while they treated the underlying cause.

The team acted immediately when Haley arrived and placed her on ECMO, providing circulatory support that stabilized her condition so they could safely perform a minimally invasive thrombectomy to remove the life-threatening clot.

The next day, Haley came off ECMO, and just three days after arriving in Wichita, she went home to her family.

Haley’s story shows why access to advanced, specialized care matters — especially when a patient’s condition changes suddenly and every minute counts.
