In Chinese medicine, autumn is connected with the Lungs—the organ system associated with breathing and our relationship with the world around us.

That connection offers a simple reminder: pause and notice your breath once in a while.

Try it between emails, before you start the car, or when you settle into a recliner at the clinic. There’s nothing to accomplish. Just a moment to notice how you feel.

If your days have been full, we’d be glad to make some room for you in the community room.

These first cool mornings after a Nashville summer feel like an invitation to exhale.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn marks the shift from summer’s warmth and outward activity toward winter’s quiet and rest. It’s associated with the Metal element, which brings themes of clarity, structure, and letting go.

You don’t need a whole new routine to welcome the season. Maybe you need a little more breathing room in the one you already have.

Explore autumn, the Metal element, and simple seasonal care in our latest blog.

You know that feeling when you’ve been sitting at your computer too long, wrestling with the same problem, getting increasingly frustrated…and then you finally get up and take a walk?

And somehow everything feels a little different afterward?

Chinese medicine would say you just moved some Qi. It’s the same thing we do in an acupuncture treatment, just without the needles.

In TCM, emotional and physical flow aren’t completely separate. Stress and frustration can constrain Qi—and constrained Qi can leave us feeling even more tense, restless or stuck.

One of the simplest remedies is movement.

It doesn’t have to be a workout. Walk around the block. Stretch. Take a few deep breaths. Shake out your shoulders. Practice Qigong. Put on a song and dance around the kitchen.

When you feel stuck, try introducing a little movement.

Then notice what changes.

Have you ever been lying in the recliner during acupuncture and thought, Okay…that was weird?

Maybe your foot suddenly got warm. Your arm started tingling. You felt a wave of heaviness, a floating sensation or a little buzz somewhere nowhere near the needles.

We hear descriptions like these all the time.
In Chinese medicine, many of these subtle sensations can be understood as signs that Qi is responding and moving through the channels.

You don’t have to feel anything unusual for acupuncture to be working, though.
Sometimes the change is simply a deeper breath, a softening muscle—or a really excellent nap. 😴

Next treatment, spend a few minutes just noticing what changes.

What do you feel during acupuncture?

“What exactly are those needles doing?”

We get this question all the time.

The TCM answer is surprisingly simple: acupuncture gets things moving.

Qi and Blood are constantly circulating through an interconnected system of channels. When that flow becomes disrupted, we may experience tension, tightness, pressure or pain. Acupuncture stimulates specific points to encourage things to move more freely again.
And sometimes, you can actually feel that movement happening.

This month on the Encircle blog, we’re diving into Qi, flow, those weird and wonderful sensations you might notice during acupuncture—and why movement is such an important concept in Chinese medicine.

Our latest email newsletter is all about flow too- check your inbox for more on what the needles are doing, how to keep your Qi flowing, and some upcoming events!
