The CDC’s new report on the most up-to-date statistics on HIV in the US showed some very troubling facts about the state of the epidemic:

- There were 39,000 new diagnoses of HIV in the US in 2024. That’s 106 diagnoses a day, or a little over 4 every hour.

- 1 in 5 of people newly diagnosed in the US already had AIDS—the most severe stage of HIV infection. This shows that too many people are being diagnosed too late and underscores the need to improve the reach of HIV testing in the US.

- 53% of people newly diagnosed in 2024 were living in the South, far more than other regions of the US (the Northeast, Midwest, or West).

Numbers like these underscore why amfAR remains committed to its mission of finding a cure for HIV.

Physically, we’re back in the office, but mentally, we’re still in Cannes reliving this magical night. We can’t thank everyone enough for helping make this year’s gala possible. Because of you all, we were able to raise over $20 million to help fund biomedical research and bring us one step closer to a cure for HIV/AIDS. Now that’s something worth celebrating.

Timothy Ray Brown, known as the “Berlin patient,” was the first person in the world to be cured of HIV. Diagnosed with leukemia, Brown received a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare genetic mutation conferring resistance to HIV. For more than a decade, until he lost his battle with cancer, he remained virus-free.

Since then, nine other people—all living with HIV and cancer—have been cured, all as a result of stem cell transplantation. In most cases, the donor cells carried the same rare genetic mutation conferring resistance to HIV.

Stem cell transplants are high-risk procedures, so they are only an option for a very small number of people with both HIV and certain blood cancers. These cases do, however, provide a wealth of information for developing a more widely accessible cure. amfAR is a leader in supporting research aimed at producing a safe and affordable cure for all who need it.
