Su***de is one of the leading causes of death during pregnancy and the first year postpartum. It is also one of the least talked about.

This Su***de Prevention Week, we are sharing data that every maternal health provider, caregiver, and community member needs to know. Because awareness is the first step toward change, and silence costs lives.

If you or someone you know is struggling, the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7. Call or text 988. ๐Ÿ“ž

Grief after perinatal loss is one of the most profound and isolating experiences a person can face, and it deserves to be met with compassion, not timelines or expectations. Yet too many people navigate this experience without adequate support or acknowledgment. ๐Ÿค

On National Grief Awareness Day, we pause to honor every family who has experienced perinatal loss.

At Seleni, we are committed to ensuring that providers, families, and communities have the knowledge and resources to show up for those who are grieving. Because no one should have to carry this alone.

August is National Breastfeeding Month, and we want to talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention. ๐Ÿ’™

Breastfeeding difficulties can be closely intertwined with postpartum anxiety and depression, yet the connection often goes unacknowledged. Many factors shape the breastfeeding experience, and when mental health is part of the picture, the challenges can feel even harder to navigate.

If you are struggling, you are not alone, and your mental health matters just as much as your feeding choices.

Postpartum psychosis is one of the most misunderstood conditions in perinatal mental health. Recognizing it early can save lives. ๐Ÿ’™

In this video, Senior Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Christiane Manzella, PhD, walks through what it can look like. Symptoms may include extreme anxiety, inability to sleep, and frantic energy.

It can also present as grandiosity or religious delusion, with some women feeling a powerful sense of divine connection or experiencing distressing thoughts that make sense to her and that may be tied to religious or spiritual beliefs.

And sometimes, a woman experiencing postpartum psychosis appears outwardly composed, making it easy to miss entirely.

Postpartum psychosis is an emergency. It is an illness in which a woman loses touch with reality. The more we understand it, the better equipped we are to intervene and provide correct and adequate care before a crisis occurs.

Today is National Nonprofit Day, and we are taking a moment to reflect on why this work matters. ๐Ÿ’ซ

At Seleni, we believe that when women are supported through the most vulnerable moments of their lives, families are stronger and communities thrive. That belief drives everything we do, from our provider training and continuing education to our community programming and advocacy.

None of it would be possible without the people who have been part of this work and helped move it forward. Our team, our trainees, our partners, our donors, our patients, and everyone who has shared Seleniโ€™s work, learned with us, sought care with us, or trusted us with their story.

Thank you for being part of what makes this work possible. ๐Ÿ’™
