The Virtue Center

The Virtue Center The Virtue Center is a place of help & hope for people facing addiction and mental health challenges. H.N. No on is refused service based on inability to pay.

Norman Alcohol Information Center (NAIC) dba The Virtue Center is a United Way of Norman Partner Agency, was founded in September 1972 by the Reverend Richard "Dick" Virtue through an initial grant provided by the National Episcopal Churchwomen and matching gifts from Norman civic leaders. Father Dick served as founding executive director for 30 years before retiring in 2002. "Sonny" Scott served

as our leader for 6 years before our current executive director, Teresa Collado, took the reins in 2008. In 1973, United Way of Norman accepted NAIC for funding. In 1975, NAIC became the first agency in the state with whom the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services contracted to provide substance abuse treatment. In October of 2017, to honor our founder, Richard Virtue, our name was changed to The Virtue Center. Today The Virtue Center provides a full spectrum of services from prevention to aftercare for clients of all ages. The Virtue Center is certified for outpatient treatment services for substance abuse and gambling by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. The Virtue Center is supported through the United Way of Norman, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, grants, foundations, individual gifts, and memorial contributions. The Virtue Center also accepts Medicaid, insurances and sliding scale fees for services.

🫢 Every program we run, every client we serve, every door we open: Teresa here has had her hands in all of it!

Teresa Collado is our one-of-a-kind CEO, but she's also a grandma, a fitness instructor, a beach fanatic, and a best friend to so many.

She's been with us for over 27 years, enough time to travel the entire world ten times over. Instead, Teresa has spent every single one of them right here at The Virtue Center, by our side and by the side of this community.

Every spotlight series has to start somewhere, and for us, there was never really a question of where πŸ’•

We'd love for you to get to know her, so drop a question in the comments below πŸ‘‡

For those who couldn't make it, our conversation was focused on gambling addiction, being one of the most underdiagnosed behavioral health conditions out there.

Unlike substance addiction, an addiction to gambling lacks many physical warning signs, meaning that the symptoms and red flags are so much harder to notice, especially early on. Like many addictions, gambling is one that can devastate finances, relationships, and mental health for years before anyone even recognizes it for what it is.

That's exactly why we host these events, because we believe that awareness is the first step for recovery. We feel that every individual and family in our community deserves access to that knowledge to help themselves and their loved ones.

Therapy and medicine are definitely major parts of recovery, but healing happens in the simple ways we tend to forget.

Did you know that food insecurity is one of the most overlooked triggers for addiction relapse? When our basic needs go unmet, the path back to substances becomes a lot shorter.

Here at the Virtue Center, we're about holistic recovery, meaning we make sure people feel taken care of in every way, including something as simple as having a snack before a session.

Many of our clients come straight from school or work with nothing in their stomachs. That snack bowl in our lobby? It matters so much more than you'd think.

Right now, we're running low, and we'd love your help restocking it. That's right, it's time for our Snack Drive: Drive-Through Style! πŸ₯«

This Friday, pull up, drop off, and drive away knowing you made someone's recovery a little easier today.

Meet Willow: The Virtue Center's Chief Comfort Officer! 🐾

In February 2022, our Vice President Board Member, Jessica Collett, walked into Norman Animal Welfare and walked out with someone special. A dog found wandering a street, now named after the very road that led her home.

She's H.A.L.O. certified, endlessly patient, and has a talent for knowing exactly when someone needs a little extra love.

She also has strong opinions about food... Hashbrowns? Obsessed. Vegetables? Hard pass. ❌πŸ₯¦

Willow's a reminder that healing can come in all shapes, sizes, and fur coats. Whether you're coming in for a session or just having a hard day, she's here and ready to offer a kiss and absolutely zero judgment.

Think you can sneak her a hashbrown? Come find out!

πŸ™ Last week, we were truly honored to receive a $15,000 donation from the Trail to Recovery 5K board members. This is an incredible contribution that will help us continue providing addiction recovery and mental health services to all here in Norman.

We're so extremely grateful to the Trail to Recovery board, sponsors, volunteers, and the nearly 400 participants who came to show their support of second chances, and made the run the success it was.

We also want to thank Judge Michael Tupper for his longtime support of recovery and for the kind words he shared about The Virtue Center. We appreciate his recognition of the importance of accessible treatment and just how much it can affect the success of healing for many and their families.

And a final thanks to The Norman Transcript and Reporter Paxson Haws for helping us share this wonderful experience and our partners to so many audiences.
We couldn't do this work without any of you and we know it πŸ’—
