When Iām overwhelmed, my brain starts making a listā¦and now I know thatās normal. But when I was a new therapist I saw it as evidence that I should just quit, because after all, Iām just not very good at this. š
My mind would raceā¦.
āMaybe I should open a coffee shop. Or become a landscaper. Maybe Iād be happier driving a forklift. I could organize closetsā¦.but wait, my closet isnāt even organized. I could sell makeup? But I donāt even like to wear makeup. Wait no, I could work at a bookstore, or better yet, open up my own ice cream shop. I do like ice creamā¦and books.ā
But hereās what Iāve learnedā¦
I donāt actually want a different career. Fantasizing isnāt always a bad thing, it can be a release from constriction and overwhelm.
So, let your mind wander a bit. Itāll come back.
Take it from me: you can learn to NOT make career decisions from a dysregulated nervous system.
I donāt need a new profession.
I need fresh air.
Heavy lifting.
Laughter.
Silence.
Movement.
Before you convince yourself youāre in the wrong career, ask yourself:
āDo I need a new job⦠or do I need a different nervous system experience today?ā
š Tell us the random career your brain wants you to to do after a hard week, or a hard day. š
