Proyecto Mariposa

Proyecto Mariposa Proyecto Mariposa started as a special free mother's day event "Celebrando Nuestras Madres."

The event continues every year to celebrate resilient women living in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. Proyecto Mariposa will provide workshops that address the needs of low-income women living in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. The mothers in this area face many obstacles to live a healthy and safe lifestyle: economic disadvantages, language barriers, gang activity, domestic violence, poor physical and mental health, and difficult family situations. The three core components in each workshop will be to motivate, inspire and empower mothers to make positive changes in their lives. In addition, the workshops will allow mothers to meet other mothers who are going through similar situations serving as a support group and an opportunity to validate their circumstances.

Every autumn, monarch butterflies fly up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the United States to reach the exact same forests in MichoacΓ‘n, even though the butterflies making the return trip north each spring are several generations removed from the ones that made the original journey south. πŸ¦‹ No individual butterfly ever completes the full round trip, yet somehow the migration route itself never gets lost across generations.
Scientists still don't fully understand how this multigenerational memory works, whether it's encoded in genetics, the position of the sun, magnetic fields, or some combination science hasn't fully unraveled yet. Local farmers along the migration corridor have watched this exact spectacle their entire lives, often altering their own routines during peak migration weeks simply out of respect for the sheer number of butterflies crossing overhead.
There's something almost impossible to fully explain about a journey that outlives every single traveler who begins it. πŸ‚
Have you ever witnessed the monarch migration in person, either in Mexico or along their route north?

🀝 International Day of Charity

Observed each year on September 5, International Day of Charity recognizes the power of generosity, service, and collective action to strengthen communities and improve lives worldwide.

For Dr. Maya Angelou, giving back was deeply connected to the way she lived β€” through education, mentorship, advocacy, and a belief in our responsibility to care for one another.

That spirit of service continues through the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation, established in 2011 to carry forward her commitment to education, health equity, and opportunity. Through initiatives including scholarships for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities and support for programs addressing health disparities, the Foundation works to create pathways for future generations to learn, thrive, and lead.

Dr. Angelou reminded us that what we have β€” our time, resources, knowledge, and compassion β€” can become a gift when shared with others.

Today, we celebrate the organizations, volunteers, and everyday people who choose to serve their communities and help make the world a little better than they found it. πŸ’›

How will you give back today?
