Sometimes "I'm fine" means exactly that. And sometimes it means "I don't have the words right now." šŸ’š

For our Home Instead family in Pasadena, World Mental Health Day is a gentle reminder that the people we love don't always say what they're carrying. Our parents. Our friends. Even ourselves.

So today, try a different kind of check-in. Not "what's wrong?" Just an unhurried "how are you?" with enough room for an honest answer.

If you or someone close to you is going through a hard time, call or text 988. Someone is always there.🌿

And whenever your family needs support at home, we're just a call away.

In-home care in Pasadena is built on people, and some of our favorite people are the ones doing good right here in our community. šŸ’š

On Monday, our team spent the evening at the Convalescent Aid Society Garden Party, and we were so happy to have a table there. Dr. Greg Sanchez and Carter P., were joined by Jennifer D., Daniel W. and Michael V. for good food, music under the trees, and a lot of heart for a cause we care about.

For over 100 years, CAS has been lending medical equipment to local families. Wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, the things that make it possible for someone to recover or stay safely at home. That's pretty close to what we do every day, so supporting them just feels right. 🌿

Thank you to everyone at CAS for a beautiful evening, and to everyone who stopped by our table to say hello!

If your family is figuring out how to keep a loved one safe and comfortable at home, we're always here to talk.

Ever picked up a flyer at a health fair and thought, "I might need this someday"? šŸ’š That's exactly why our Pasadena in-home care team loves showing up at events like this one.

Our Business Development Advisor, Jennifer D., spent October 1 at the Occidental College Health & Wellness Fair, sharing what support at home can look like for aging parents and grandparents. "Someday" has a way of showing up sooner than we expect, and it helps so much to already know who to call when it does.

Big thank you to Occidental College for including us, and to Jennifer for being our friendly face out there. 🌿

Keep our number handy, just in case.

Some of the best conversations happen across a folding table. šŸ’š

Jennifer D. spent Saturday at the Senior Expo at Pasadena City College, sharing info on in-home care, veteran care benefits, and our emergency preparedness guide. People came by with real questions. When is it time to get help? What does home care cost? Can Mom stay at home? We love those questions.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. And if you have a question you didn't get to ask, ask us anytime.

Could your family handle an emergency tonight? 🚨

Most of us would say "probably." Then the power goes out and suddenly nobody knows where the flashlight is, Mom's medication list is only in her head, and the phone's at 12%.

For older adults, a little planning makes a big difference. So we put together a simple emergency preparedness guide for families, the same one we handed out at the Disaster Preparedness Fair in Altadena last weekend. What goes in the kit, what to do in a medical emergency, when to call 911, and how to get ready for floods, earthquakes, wildfires and heat waves. And with a strong El NiƱo forecast this winter, now's a good time to check yours. šŸŒ§ļø

ā€œHospice is another word for hope.ā€

Families may worry that choosing hospice means they are giving up. Hospice can offer something very different: a team of people who come alongside your loved one and your family with comfort, care and support.

In this Caregiver Chats clip, gerontologist Dr. Julie Masters shares why learning about hospice sooner can help families access the resources available to them.

Finding care is hard. Finding the right people to trust can be even harder. šŸ’š

Most families we meet aren't just looking for ā€œa caregiver.ā€ They're looking for someone they can trust in their home, with the person they love most. That's a big ask and honestly, it should be.

So when Miguel O. from Monrovia took the time to share how the last three months have gone for his spouse, it meant a lot to us.

He talked about Chona B., our Client Care Coordinator, and described her as professional, interactive, and efficient in the way she supports families.

And he shared how Marisela H., his spouse's Care Professional, has been caring and sensitive while responding promptly when their situation changes.

In his words:

ā€œSo far, Marisela has been a welcomed addition to our home.ā€ 🄹

Chona and Marisela, thank you for showing up like this every single day. šŸ’š

If you know a family in Pasadena or Monrovia who's been quietly trying to figure out in-home care, share this with them. Sometimes seeing someone else's story is what makes that first call feel possible.

Did you know dementia can affect people under age 65?

When someone is still working, raising a family, or making plans for the future, cognitive changes can be easy to explain away or dismiss.

While age is the biggest risk factor for dementia, younger-onset dementia can happen. If changes in memory, thinking, or behavior feel unexplained, it is okay to ask questions and seek answers.

For anyone loving and caring for someone with memory changes, this is your reminder to keep talking, keep sharing and keep being present. šŸ’š

But sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can offer someone we love is simply our presence.

In this Caregiver Chats conversation, Dr. Lakelyn is joined by gerontologist Dr. Julie Masters to talk about the emotions that can come with end-of-life caregiving, from identity shifts and saying goodbye to finding connection through life review and memory changes.

After a dementia diagnosis, it's common for families to pull back from social situations, but isolation can make the journey even harder.

Even when someone has difficulty finding words or remembering names, they may still recognize the emotions, relationships, and people who help them feel safe.

A familiar voice. A favorite song. Holding a hand. Simply sitting together. These moments of connection still matter.

What helps your loved one feel comforted and close to you? Learn more at homeinstead.com šŸ«‚

Have you ever felt like something was different with someone you love, even if you could not explain exactly why?

Dementia can affect much more than memory. Changes in communication, judgment, mood, behavior, or problem-solving can sometimes appear before significant memory loss.

Trust your instincts. If something feels different, it is okay to ask questions and seek support.

Have you ever wondered if a loved one’s changes were ā€œjust part of getting older?ā€

Dementia is not a normal part of aging.

If you have noticed changes in someone you love and are carrying questions you do not quite know how to ask, you are not alone. We are here to help families find support and take the next step when they are ready.

Have you ever heard ā€œdementiaā€ and ā€œAlzheimer’sā€ used as if they mean the same thing?

It is understandable. But dementia is an umbrella term for symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and everyday life. Alzheimer’s disease is one specific type of dementia.

Learning the language around a diagnosis can help families feel more prepared for the road ahead.

Are we helping, or are we making assumptions based on age? Sometimes the best way to support an older adult is simply to ask what they want and need. By listening first, we can help preserve independence.

What do you think? When does helping cross the line into ageism? šŸ¤”

Narcissistic parents don’t inspire their children to care for them. Sometimes, the well of loving memories and connection has run dry. šŸ’”

There’s more to the Iowa State Fair than corn dogs and butter sculptures—it is also a place for meaningful conversations. šŸŽ”šŸŒ

Dr. Lakelyn spent the day at the Home Instead booth talking with fairgoers about aging, caregiving and the many ways families can find support.

One conversation that will stay with her was with Marv, who cared for his late wife, Sharon. He shared how meaningful Home Instead’s support was for them—a powerful reminder that care can make a real difference for both the person receiving it and the family member beside them.

She also stopped by the Iowa Department of Transportation booth to talk about one of the harder caregiving conversations: driving. Starting early, leading with empathy and focusing on safety can help make the conversation feel less like taking something away and more like supporting independence.

Grateful for everyone who stopped to share their stories, questions and wisdom. Stay tuned for more from the fair! šŸ’œ Iowa DOT Iowa State Fair
