It makes a clear distinction between "alternative" or unproven and "complementary" or tested useful therapies in cancer care.Integrative oncology is a seamless rapprochement of interventions that benefit cancer patients. Because a constantly growing number of cancer patients throughout the world turn to both alternative and complementary therapies as part of their cancer treatment plan, it is essential that oncologists have ready access to information about research, existing treatment programs, and both the benefits and dangers of the wide range of complementary therapies available today. Today at ASCO

It was wonderful to connect in person at the ASCO booth with SIO President Dr. Channing Paller. We were also pleased to see President-Elect Dr. Richard Lee, past presidents Ting Bao, Suzie Zick, and Eleanor Walker, as well as Conference Co-Chair Eleanor Walker. It is always inspiring to see the strength of our community come together.

Integrative oncology complements the incredible medical advances being shared this week at ASCO. SIO members are here to learn, network, and share the value of evidence-informed integrative cancer care.

Thank you to our members and leaders for helping advance SIO’s mission and for continuing to champion whole-person, patient-centered cancer care.

As part of our series highlighting the new Comprehensive Integrative Oncology textbook, Dr. Delia Chiaramonte shares an overview of Chapter 64: 'Integrative end-of-life care'.

Delia Chiaramonte, MD, MS is the founder of the Integrative Palliative Institute and host of The Integrative Palliative Podcast. She is Board certified in Family Medicine and Palliative Medicine and certified by the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She is the former Associate Director and Director of Education for the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Integrative Medicine and the former Division Chief of Integrative and Palliative Medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center/Gilchrist. She has been voted a Top Doctor in Baltimore by her physician peers.

Dr. Chiaramonte is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and she is on the faculty of the Integrative and Functional Medicine Fellowship at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute. She has published textbook chapters on integrative end of life care, supporting families in the intensive care unit, and integrative pain management, and she lectures frequently to both medical and lay audiences.

She is the author of Coping Courageously: A Heart-Centered Guide for Navigating a Loved One’s Illness Without Losing Yourself. Dr. Chiaramonte offers private consulting for families with a seriously ill loved one.
