Did you know that labor happens in phases? 🤔 As Dr. Anna Binstock explains, there are three phases of labor:

Phase one is the longest, and it covers the time contractions begin to the time to start pushing.

Phase two, also known as active labor, is the timeframe when pushing begins and the baby is delivered.

Phase three refers to the delivery of the placenta.

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital will host the 24th Annual Perinatal and Neonatal Health Care Conference for Nurses and Allied Health Staff on Friday, Sept. 18.

The event will focus on caring for the most vulnerable patient populations, with speakers presenting on topics including fetal therapy, care in the periviable period, supporting bereaved families, and caring for perinatal patients with opioid use disorder.

In labor, contractions occur that lead to a change in cervical dilation. If that dilation isn't happening, or you have other health risks, your doctor may recommend an induction.

As Dr. Anna Binstock explains, induction is the process of achieving cervical dilation by getting the cervix softer and ready to dilate. Your doctor may recommend an induction if you're past your due date, experiencing high blood pressure or diabetes, or if your baby is measuring small.

As we continue to recognize National Breastfeeding Month, we want to spotlight one of our own team members who is giving back and supporting local families in need. Kilee Richner, a registered nurse at UPMC Altoona and a mother of two spent her birthday helping her community by donating breast milk.

“I just gave birth to my daughter in May and so I have an oversupply of breast milk and it has to go somewhere. So I figured it would be best going to babies in need…it’s such an easy process also, being able to bring it to UPMC Altoona to donate it,” she says.

Breastfeeding is a personal choice and a journey that varies for every mom and their child. As a designated depot, the hospital partners with the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank to provide safely sourced donor milk for newborns in need.

“I would encourage anybody who may have a freezer stash or an oversupply to look into it. Being able to give back and give it to those that are in need, like I said a million times, it’s so worth it,” Kilee shares.

Amy Kelly, MD, breast radiologist with UPMC Magee-Womens Imaging, recently spoke to WTAE about how contrast enhanced mammography (CEM) can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. CEM is now available for diagnostic mammograms at six UPMC Magee-Womens Imaging locations in the Pittsburgh region.

“This is a cancer that would have otherwise been missed.” A Pittsburgh woman credits contrast-enhanced mammography with finding cancer hidden by dense breast tissue.

UPMC Magee-Womens in Erie recently hosted a "Sip and See" event, which provided an opportunity for participants to learn more about women's health services, meet providers, and tour the facility.

The event included representatives from prenatal education, lactation support, Magee-Womens Research Institute, doula services, UPMC Magee-Womens Specialty Services, and Children's Community Pediatrics.

To kick off National Breastfeeding Month, the team at UPMC Magee-Womens in Erie recently marked World Breastfeeding Week, held Aug. 1–7. The annual global campaign, coordinated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action in partnership with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, promotes efforts to protect, support, and encourage breastfeeding worldwide.

A lobby display at Magee-Womens featured breastfeeding information, resources for expectant and new parents, and giveaways, along with popcorn and ice cream for visitors. Lactation nurses were also available to answer questions.

UPMC Magee-Womens in Erie also recently marked 15 months since launching its milk depot. UPMC Magee-Womens was the first hospital in northwestern Pennsylvania to become a registered depot, only the second in the UPMC system and one of just eight facilities in Pennsylvania. In its first 15 months, the program collected 10,000 ounces of milk from eight area donors, offering a convenient way to support families and highlight the importance of breastfeeding.

Through these efforts, UPMC Magee-Womens in Erie hopes to provide valuable resources and education to help families reach their feeding goals.

“If you can’t go to school or if you can’t go to work because of your period, that’s not normal. If that individual cannot participate in basic society and job and living — if it’s knocking them out of their day-to-day activities — then that’s not normal.”

Adenomyosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows into the uterine wall, can cause painful menstrual cycles and heavy bleeding.

Dr. Nicole Donnellan, director of the Endometriosis and Chronic Pelvic Pain Center at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, was recently quoted in the Tribune-Review discussing adenomyosis and its impact on patients.
