Residents, you can help make Springmoor an even more vibrant community than it already is! Join our new committee, the Volunteer-Service Opportunities Committee (VSOC). The purpose of the committee is threefold:

1. To identify volunteer service opportunities for residents and publicize them.
2. To recommend to Springmoor management how they can support these volunteer activities.
3. To report on interesting ways our resident volunteers are making a difference.

Extensive scientific research demonstrates that people who volunteer are happier and more satisfied with their lives. They also experience lower rates of anxiety and depression. Volunteering is one way to add purpose and meaning to our lives. Giving back builds emotional resilience and self-esteem, especially during stressful life transitions.

Studies show that volunteering 2 to 4 hours per week maximizes “helper’s high” and protects cognitive health as we age. The data indicate that helping regularly matters much more than committing a large number of hours.

This committee has huge aspirations! We’ll need lots of help, ideas, and boosters—in the form of thinkers, writers, and activists with a wide range of interests and talents.

Keep your eye on The Springmoor Herald for details regarding volunteer opportunities both on campus and off. Our Residents Association has 20 active committees, all of which depend on volunteers to accomplish their goals, and the Triangle community has thousands of nonprofit agencies and communities of faith doing amazing work with volunteer support.

Please join us in congratulating Chandler Gibbs, the recipient of the 2026 Spirit of Springmoor College Scholarship. This fall, she will attend Winston-Salem State University, where she will continue her educational journey and work toward her future goals.

Our community established this scholarship to help employees with college-related expenses, while recognizing their hard work, dedication, and contributions to the Springmoor community. Recipients demonstrate strong academic achievement, positive job performance, and involvement in sports, extracurricular activities, or community service. To be considered, applicants must have worked at Springmoor for at least one year, maintained a positive employment record, and been accepted to college.

We're proud of Chandler's accomplishments and grateful for the dedication she has shown both as a student and as a member of the Springmoor team. Her achievements reflect the values of excellence, service, and perseverance that are celebrated through this scholarship program.

Congratulations, Chandler! We wish you every success as you begin this exciting new chapter, and we look forward to all you will accomplish in the years ahead.

Our two full-time chaplains nurture a culture of spiritual and psychosocial well-being on our campus. The chaplain role is a longstanding component of our Pathways Wellness Program, which provides spiritual support, pastoral care, and counseling to residents, families, caregivers, and staff in need, always honoring their diverse belief systems.

Details about the impact of the many programs and services the chaplains provide are on pages 10 & 11 of our recently released 2025 Annual Report: springmoor.org/about-us/annual-reports

Our deepest appreciate to Lori Higgins & Jim Rogers for all you do each day to make our community such a special place to live and work!

Christian Green, an accomplished pianist and vocalist, gave another spectacular performance in our auditorium on Tues., 8/25. He opened the evening with a moving tribute to Dolly Parton, who passed away earlier that day at the age of 80. The show ended with a dynamic rendition of “Proud Mary” that earned Christian a standing ovation from the packed auditorium. Residents know he always surprises his audience… and never disappoints! A Chapel Hill native and a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Christian is an incredibly talented musician who always gives a joyful, uplifting, and engaging concert.

Last week, Dr. Elliott Engel once again entertained Springmoor residents with one of his lively, insightful talks. Titled “My Picture of Vincent Van Gogh,” this was the 68th presentation Dr. Engel has made at Springmoor over many years. A nationally known lecturer and author, he is celebrated for his humor, energetic speaking style, and ability to bring the arts, history, and literature to life.

Dr. Engel has taught at multiple universities, including NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke. He always fills the Springmoor auditorium and will return in October to speak on another topic. Our residents embrace the concept of lifelong learning, and Dr. Engel’s lectures are just one of many such opportunities offered on campus each month.
