Recovery takes energy. But what happens when fatigue starts getting in the way? 🥱 💤

Fatigue after a significant injury or illness can affect therapy, exercise, everyday activities, and even getting back into the community.

For our next EmpowerU education event, we’re taking a closer look at why fatigue happens, how to recognize and track it, and practical strategies that can help you manage it throughout your rehabilitation journey.

🗓️ Wednesday, September 16
⏰ 1–2 p.m.
📍 Join us in person at Sheltering Arms Institute or virtually via Microsoft Teams

Whether you’re navigating recovery yourself or supporting someone who is, we’d love to have you join the conversation.

When you think of body weight support in rehabilitation, walking probably comes to mind first. But what about your arms? 🤔💪

At Sheltering Arms Institute, our occupational therapists are using the Bioness Medical Vector Body Weight Support System in a different way for patients with spinal cord injuries: helping them safely practice upper-extremity weight-bearing.

Why does that matter? These exercises can help work on upper-body strength, posture, and endurance while the system provides customized support.

So how does technology typically associated with walking become a tool for upper-body rehabilitation? Samantha White, OTR/L, takes us inside the approach in our latest RehaBlog.

The sweatbands are out, which can only mean one thing… we’ve got some new members of the Sweat Club. 😤💪🔥

Around Sheltering Arms Institute, these sweatbands are a badge of honor, and you’ve got to put in the work to earn one.

During therapy, patients work with their care team toward an individualized target heart rate, challenging themselves to get the most out of every session. Hit that target and you’ve officially earned your place in the club. 😎

That sweatband represents the effort, determination, and progress behind every session, and we couldn’t be prouder of the patients wearing them.

To our newest members: you put in the work. You earned it. And we’re proud to have you in the club. 👏🔥💜

Who’s coming for a sweatband next? 👀

Living with a spinal cord injury? Help shape more opportunities to get active, connect, and find community. 💚

Our community partner, the Kelly Brush Foundation, is conducting the KBF Readiness Study to better understand what helps people with spinal cord injuries get involved in adaptive sports and recreation, what barriers stand in the way, and when the right support can make the biggest difference.

By sharing your experience through a short survey, you can contribute to research aimed at better connecting people with adaptive recreation, community support, peer networks, and resources when they’re ready.

📱 Scan the QR code or visit https://kbf.org/readinessstudy-resources/ to take the survey and help move this work forward.

Would you feel ready to care for a loved one after they leave the hospital? 💜 For many families, the transition home after inpatient rehabilitation can bring a whole new set of questions. Caregiver Training Day helps patients and their loved ones feel more confident and prepared before that day arrives.

Once a week, caregivers can spend a full day alongside their loved one and our interdisciplinary care team, with hands-on practice, education, and opportunities to ask questions in real time.

Thank you to the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust for their generous support in making this program possible!

This National Dog Day, we’re celebrating some very good boys and girls. 🐾💜

Our therapy dogs got the pawsitively sweet celebration they deserved at a Therapy Dog Ice Cream Social in the Bridge Garden! 🍦

A little sunshine, a few treats, and plenty of love and pets for our four-legged volunteers who bring smiles, comfort, and tail wags to Sheltering Arms Institute.

A special thank you to the Sheltering Arms Circle of the Kings Daughters and Sons for hosting such a sweet afternoon! 🐶☀️
