VCPG aims to increase public awareness of problem gambling, ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to encourage research and programs for prevention and education. The Virginia Council on Problem Gambling is a state-focused, non-profit organization who aims to continue its mission in Virginia for increasing public awareness of problem gambling,

ensuring the widespread availability of support networks and treatment options for problem gamblers and their families, as well as encouraging prevention-focused research and educational programs about this real problem affecting Virginians and their families every day. Problem gambling–or gambling addiction–includes all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family or vocational pursuits. The symptoms include increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need to bet more money more frequently, restlessness or irritability when attempting to stop, “chasing” losses, and loss of control manifested by continuation of the gambling behavior in spite of mounting, serious, negative consequences. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, please call, chat or text our confidential and toll-free helpline at: (888) 532-3500. We’re available 24/7 so, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at any time.

Did you know that in 2025, 2 out of every 10 intakes from calls to the VCPG Helpline were individuals aged 55 and older?

Last week, VCPG Executive Director Willard Robertson co-presented with Virginia Tech's Ruthann Froberg at the Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society's 2026 Elder Abuse Conference.

During their session, they explored the unique challenges of problem gambling among older adults in Virginia. Ruthann shared key insights from an ongoing research project tracking these gambling patterns and more.

This study is a collaborative effort conducted by:
- The Virginia Partnership for Gaming and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University
- The Virginia Center on Aging at VCU
- The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
- The Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology

We are proud that our very own Dr. Carolyn Hawley is a member of this research team.

👏 Thank you to the Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society for the opportunity to host this important conversation and raise awareness together!
