There's a pervasive myth that substance use disorders primarily affect younger people. The data tells a different story.

Older adults experience substance use disorders at significant rates, often related to prescription medication misuse, alcohol use that escalates after retirement or loss, and untreated mental health conditions.

The stigma is different too. Families may dismiss warning signs as "just getting older" or feel shame about a parent or grandparent struggling with addiction.

Treatment works for older adults. Age-appropriate care that accounts for medical complexity, medication interactions, and life stage challenges can be incredibly effective.

Relapse can be part of the recovery process. That's not permission. It's clinical reality.

Substance use disorders are chronic conditions. Like diabetes or hypertension, they require ongoing management. Sometimes that management is disrupted.

What matters is what happens next.

Does the person have access to immediate support to re-stabilize? Do they have a treatment team that responds with clinical intervention rather than judgment? Can they identify what led to relapse and adjust their recovery plan accordingly?

At Tandem, relapse doesn't disqualify you from care. It signals that we need to reassess and strengthen your treatment plan.

Recovery isn't linear. Progress isn't erased by setbacks. And you don't have to start over from scratch.
