WHY NOT WORKSHOP HELPS ROANOKE'S STUDENTS

Roanoke's Why Not Workshop is a nonprofit that offers an alternative approach for students who do not thrive in the traditional classroom setting. Children explore what interests them through hands-on, real world experiences facilitated by creative, adventurous staff. Math, Science, Social Studies, and Literacy curriculum can be built around those interests. Since literacy is the cornerstone of all learning, a targeted balanced approach will ensure appropriate instruction and intervention is provided in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing.

Through a partnership with Roanoke Public Libraries, the Legal Aid Society of Roanoke Valley will offer a free legal service clinic where eligible individuals can meet with a lawyer for help with a variety of legal matters.

*Help Improve Transition Information Access for Families of Students with Disabilities*
We want to hear from you!

During the 2026 General Assembly session, House Bill 996 (HB 996) was passed to help improve the transition from high school to adult services and opportunities for students with disabilities. The legislation directs the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), the Virginia Department of Education, and other partners to develop a plan for clearer transition guidance, better information and resources, stronger connections with Community Services Boards, and an online resource to help students and families understand their options after high school.

The goal is to help more students with disabilities successfully move into postsecondary education, training, employment, day programs, independent living, and life-skills programs.

We are asking families, educators, Community Services Board staff, and service providers to complete a brief survey. Your feedback will help us understand what information is hard to find, where barriers exist, and what resources or supports would make the transition process easier.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share it with others who may want to provide input. Your experience can help shape better transition information and supports for Virginia’s students and families.

*** ACTION REQUIRED--Help Shape Federal Long-Term Care Policy ***
On Friday, October 16, U.S. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Wyden (D-OR), along with a group of 18 Democratic Senators, released a request for information (RFI) on reforming the nation’s long-term care system entitled, “Delivering an Affordable Home Care Guarantee for American Families.”

The RFI seeks feedback from advocates and other stakeholders to inform policies that will ensure long-term care is sustainable, accessible, and affordable for older adults and people with disabilities across the country.
The three main topics outlined for comments are:
• Making home care affordable and accessible, including establishing a universal home care benefit and safeguarding beneficiaries’ rights and protections;
• Improving the quality of care in nursing homes, including increasing transparency and strengthening staffing standards; and
• Strengthening the long-term care workforce, including addressing workforce shortages and supporting family caregivers.
While the Senators have held listening sessions with more than 180 organizations and advocates to inform this RFI, there are still many voices and groups that Senators still need to hear from.

Please consider responding to the RFI to share the challenges you are seeing in your communities and to provide input on the policies that would improve access to high-quality long-term care. You can submit your comments to [email protected]. Responses to the RFI are due December 18, 2026.
