As of 1/1/2014 (over 12 years ago!) HIPAA requires health insurance carriers to pay via EFT and send ERA’s vs paper EOB’s. There is a lot of talk about concern for AI replacing humans in our industry. If we are not actively trying to reduce labor costs and/or increase revenue for practices we serve then we are the ones that should fear AI. Kicking it old school or “very old school” relying on paper EOB’s in 2026 quite honestly boggles my mind. Please share the below with your management if they wish to stay in the dark ages. Not sorry if I offended anyone that resists ERA’s and EFT’s. CMS has a team that investigates health insurance carriers that resist changing to ERA’s and EFT. I have reported close to 30 and have 100% success rate. Also, logging into payer portals, Zelis, etc is insane. The HIPAA rule requires payer to deliver ERA TO YOUR CLEARINGHOUSE. Either reduce the steps and work you have or sit there until they replace you with AI or someone willing to change to reduce labor costs and increase efficiency.
