The Alpha Who Burned The Moon
Chapter 1: The Rejection
POV: Elara Halloway

Tonight, the man destined to be my mate will reject me in front of every Alpha in the North—and I will let him, because his rejection is the only chance I have to get close enough to destroy his family.

I steady the heavy silver tray resting against my hip, my fingers white-knuckled against the polished edge. The grand hall of Vane Manor is a cavern of gilded cruelty, draped in dark silks and reeking of old blood and expensive ch*****ne. Velvet-lined chandeliers cast a amber glow over the throng of lords, ladies, and high-ranking wolves who have gathered to celebrate the rising heir. I keep my chin tucked, my gaze locked onto the marble floor. To every highborn guest sipping cabernet tonight, I am merely Wren: a nameless, silent Moonbound servant with no history and no voice.

Underneath my collar, however, I am Elara Halloway.

The silver strip of metal pressed against my throat burns like cold iron. It is a slave’s mark, engineered by the Vane Pack to suppress the scent of lowborn servants and choke out our wolves before they can ever howl. It keeps us obedient. It keeps us invisible. But tonight, invisibility is my greatest weapon. The succession ceremony has drawn every guard to the main floor, leaving the eastern wing unguarded. My goal is simple: slip past the servants’ pantry, break into the Vane archive before the crown touches Kieran’s head, and retrieve the ledger that proves the Halloway Pack was slaughtered, not traitorous.

A sharp elbow strikes my ribs, rattling the crystal flutes on my tray.

"Eyes down, girl," whispers Martha, the head housekeeper, her voice low and tight with fear. "Mistress Seraphine is watching."

I glance sideways. At the top of the dais stands Seraphine Vane, her sharp features carved from ice and arrogance. Her crimson gown drags across the stone like a trail of fresh blood. If I am caught out of position, Seraphine will have me flayed at the courtyard post. If I am caught inside the archive, I won't survive until dawn.

Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall swing open, and the ambient chatter dies instantly.

Kieran Vane enters.

He moves with the fluid, predatory grace of an Alpha who has never known defeat. Broad-shouldered, tailored in black, and bearing the dark mark of the Vane crest across his lapel, he radiates power so absolute it makes the surrounding air feel thin. He is about to be crowned leader of the Northern Territories, stepping into the blood-stained shoes of his late father. I hate him with an intensity that burns hotter than the silver at my neck. I need him arrogant, focused on his crown, and thoroughly distracted.

I step forward to pour w**e at the edge of the high table, positioning myself near the shadowed archway that leads to the servants' corridor. I just need five seconds. Just five seconds without an eye on me.

I tip the decanter over a crystal glass. And then, the universe shatters.

The atmosphere in the room shifts instantly. The scent of ozone, damp cedar, heavy autumn rain, and wild, untamed smoke rushes into my lungs, so thick and immediate it nearly chokes me. Beneath the silver collar on my neck, something ancient and dormant stirs. A sharp, lightning-hot pulse hits my ribs, fanning a spark that has been dark for eighteen years.

My wolf lifts her head, baring her teeth.

Mine.

The word doesn't belong to me; it erupts from the deepest, darkest cavern of my soul with a force that makes my knees buckle. The decanter wobbles in my hand, w**e splashing over the ivory tablecloth like spilled blood.

Kieran stops mid-step in the center of the hall.

Slowly, deliberately, his head snaps in my direction. His storm-gray eyes lock onto mine, instantly piercing through my servant’s rags, my bent spine, and my false identity. A brilliant, molten gold flares within his irises—the unmistakable mark of the predator recognizing its mirror. The air in the grand hall turns to stone. Music stops. The laughter vanishes. The mate bond, dormant and suppressed for nearly two decades, snaps tightly into place, binding my soul to the heir of the very monsters who destroyed my bloodline.

Silence hangs over the room like a executioner's blade.

Kieran closes the distance between us in three long, deliberate strides. He doesn't look at his mother, nor the lords gasping around him. He stops inches from me. The sheer heat radiating off his skin threatens to melt the silver around my throat.

He reaches out, his large hand cupping my chin, his calloused fingers digging into my jaw as he tilts my face upward into the harsh chandelier light. Up close, I see the absolute terror flickering beneath his cold facade. He sees me. Not Wren the servant. He sees Elara Halloway—the daughter of the woman his father branded a traitor and put to the torch.

He knows who I am. And he knows what our bond means.

"You," he breathes, the word a razor-thin whisper.

His fingers tighten until my bones ache, but I refuse to pull back. I stare directly into his gray eyes, letting him see the venom burning behind my silence.

Kieran draws in a ragged breath, pulls his hand away as if my skin has scorched him, and steps back into the center of the dais. He raises his chin, his voice booming through the vaulted rafters, cold, clear, and dripping with merciless absolute authority.

"I reject you, Elara Halloway," Kieran declares, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "I reject the bond. I reject the blood in your veins."

A collective gasp ripples through the crowd. A physical tear ripped through my chest—the agonizing, soul-rending shock of a severed mate bond. Pain flares through my veins like liquid fire, threatening to force a scream from my throat. My vision blackens around the edges. I bite the inside of my cheek until the copper taste of blood fills my mouth, anchoring me to the stone floor. I will not give him my tears. I will not give him my agony.

I lift my head, meeting his gaze with a terrifying, silent defiance.

"You haven't rejected a mate, Kieran Vane," I say, my voice carrying clearly across the quieted hall, striking every Alpha present like a slap. "You’ve just rejected the last witness to your father's crimes."

"Insolent rat!" Seraphine’s screech pierces the air as she glides down the steps of the dais. Her eyes are wide with fury and panic. "Collars! Tighten her iron! Drag this creature below the estate and lock her in the flooded cells!"

The Lunar Concord—the council of elders—watches in stony silence. Not a single person speaks up. No one defends a Moonbound servant, especially one who carries the disgraced name of a fallen pack.

Two heavy-set guards rush forward, slamming their fist into my shoulder and seizing my arms, yanking them brutally behind my back. My tray crashes to the floor, crystal shattering across the marble. The plan is ruined. The archive is impossible now. I am being dragged toward the dark, damp corridors beneath the manor where servants go to disappear.

Yet, as the guards haul me backward toward the dark servants' arch, Kieran shifts his weight.

His right fist clenches tightly at his side. The movement pulls his sleeve back just an inch, exposing the underside of his bare palm under the torchlight.

My breath hitches in my throat.

Traversing the center of his right palm is a pale, jagged, star-shaped scar. It is a burn mark—distinct, brutal, and unforgettable.

Memory hits me like a physical blow, dragging me back eighteen years into the suffocating heat of a burning manor. I remember hiding under the floorboards as a child, choking on black smoke, watching a man’s hand rest against the doorframe while my mother screamed inside the fire. That hand had borne the exact same jagged, star-shaped scar.

Kieran wasn't just safe inside his nursery that night.

Kieran was there. He watched my family burn.

The guards drag me over the threshold into the dark corridor, but Kieran turns his head toward me one final time. His posture is stiff, his expression a mask of ruthless frost, but beneath his leather tunic, his chest heaves. His wolf is thrashing against his skin, wild and deeply disturbed.

He steps toward the shadow of the doorway, leaning in just close enough that his breath brushes my ear over the clanking of my iron chains.

“You were supposed to be dead,” Kieran Vane says, so quietly that only I can hear him—and for the first time in eighteen years, I realize the man who rejected me may be the only person alive who knows what happened the night my family burned.
