This Saturday, our Home Instead San Diego office team is heading to Balboa Park at 8 AM to participate in Alzheimer's San Diego 10th Annual Walk4Alz! 💜🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

But this walk is about so much more than the miles we cover. It's about the individuals living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, the families navigating the challenges of a diagnosis, and the caregivers who show up with love, patience, and compassion every single day.

At Home Instead, we see firsthand how Alzheimer's affects not only the person diagnosed but also the people who love and care for them. We believe no family should have to navigate this journey alone. That's why we're proud to support Alzheimer's San Diego and its mission to provide education, resources, support, and services to individuals and families affected by dementia in our community. đź’ś

🌟 Want to make a difference with us?

đź’ś JOIN OUR TEAM! Walk alongside our Home Instead family as we come together to raise awareness and support local families affected by Alzheimer's.

When evenings bring more confusion, restlessness, or changes in behavior for the person you care for, it can be exhausting and difficult to know what’s causing it or what might help.

Join Dr. Lakelyn Eichenberger, Gerontologist, for our next Community Lounge exploring the connection between dementia, circadian rhythms, sleep, and sundowning.

In this session, you’ll learn how to recognize when changes may be related to sundowning versus medical, environmental, or situational factors, plus practical, person-centered strategies to support better sleep, safety, and well-being for the person in your care.

💜 Walking Together for a Walk to End Alzheimer’s 💜

What a meaningful day at the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s! Our Home Instead San Diego team came together to support a cause that touches so many of the families and individuals we have the privilege of serving. 💜

Despite the severe San Diego heat, our team showed up, walked together, and stood alongside an incredible community of people whose lives have been affected by Alzheimer’s in so many different ways.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was meeting wonderful new people—families walking in memory of loved ones, caregivers sharing their stories, advocates raising awareness, and individuals simply showing up because they believe in a better future.

We also had the opportunity to connect with people who may need support and remind them that they don't have to navigate this journey alone. Whether it's a family looking for guidance, a caregiver who needs respite, or someone searching for compassionate dementia care, we're here to help.

Today was about so much more than a walk. It was about coming together, sharing stories, offering support, raising awareness, and showing up for our community.

To everyone who walked, volunteered, shared their story, supported the cause, or cheered us on—thank you. Every step, conversation, and connection helps move us closer to a world without Alzheimer’s. 💜

After a dementia diagnosis, it's common for families to pull back from social situations, but isolation can make the journey even harder.

Even when someone has difficulty finding words or remembering names, they may still recognize the emotions, relationships, and people who help them feel safe.

A familiar voice. A favorite song. Holding a hand. Simply sitting together. These moments of connection still matter.

What helps your loved one feel comforted and close to you? Learn more at homeinstead.com đź«‚

Have you ever felt like something was different with someone you love, even if you could not explain exactly why?

Dementia can affect much more than memory. Changes in communication, judgment, mood, behavior, or problem-solving can sometimes appear before significant memory loss.

Trust your instincts. If something feels different, it is okay to ask questions and seek support.

Have you ever wondered if a loved one’s changes were “just part of getting older?”

Dementia is not a normal part of aging.

If you have noticed changes in someone you love and are carrying questions you do not quite know how to ask, you are not alone. We are here to help families find support and take the next step when they are ready.

Have you ever heard “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” used as if they mean the same thing?

It is understandable. But dementia is an umbrella term for symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and everyday life. Alzheimer’s disease is one specific type of dementia.

Learning the language around a diagnosis can help families feel more prepared for the road ahead.

Are we helping, or are we making assumptions based on age? Sometimes the best way to support an older adult is simply to ask what they want and need. By listening first, we can help preserve independence.

What do you think? When does helping cross the line into ageism? 🤔

There’s more to the Iowa State Fair than corn dogs and butter sculptures—it is also a place for meaningful conversations. 🎡🌭

Dr. Lakelyn spent the day at the Home Instead booth talking with fairgoers about aging, caregiving and the many ways families can find support.

One conversation that will stay with her was with Marv, who cared for his late wife, Sharon. He shared how meaningful Home Instead’s support was for them—a powerful reminder that care can make a real difference for both the person receiving it and the family member beside them.

She also stopped by the Iowa Department of Transportation booth to talk about one of the harder caregiving conversations: driving. Starting early, leading with empathy and focusing on safety can help make the conversation feel less like taking something away and more like supporting independence.

Grateful for everyone who stopped to share their stories, questions and wisdom. Stay tuned for more from the fair! đź’ś Iowa DOT Iowa State Fair
