We answer the phone at 2am.

Not an answering service that takes a message. Not a voicemail that promises a return call in the morning. A person from our office who can actually do something.

Ask any agency you are considering what happens if you call them at 2am on a Sunday. The answer tells you a great deal about what the rest of the relationship will look like.

The holidays are closer than you think, and they are when families find out.

You fly in for Thanksgiving and the house tells you things the phone calls did not. Mail on the counter. The same shirt three days running. A refrigerator with nothing in it but condiments. A parent who is thinner than you remember.

It is not that anyone was hiding it. It is that a weekly phone call is a very small window.

If you are coming into town in November, start the conversation now, while you are calm and nobody is upset and it is not a holiday. October is a much better month to ask hard questions than December.

Where we show up.

Chamber mixers in El Cajon. The Santee Chamber ribbon cutting. Senior center Tuesdays. A raffle table for a full day on the lake. Church halls, community rooms, and at least one very good tamale fundraiser.

We are a home care company, so most of what we do happens behind closed doors. Showing up in public is how a community learns who we are before they ever need us.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a good month to say it: if your organization, parish, senior center, or neighborhood group has a room and an hour, we will bring the coffee and answer every question families have about in home care. In English or in Spanish. No pitch, just answers.

October is the month the days get shorter, and for someone with dementia that changes everything.

Late afternoon confusion gets worse when the light drops earlier. It has a name, sundowning, and it is not a sign that things are suddenly falling apart. It is a sign that the routine needs to shift with the season.

What helps:

Turn the lamps on before the light fades, not after.
Move the hardest tasks of the day, bathing, medications, appointments, into the morning.
Keep the late afternoon quiet and predictable. Same chair, same music, same person if you can manage it.
Close the curtains once it is dark outside so reflections do not become strangers in the window.

Our caregivers are certified in dementia care. They know this shift is coming and they plan for it.

We do not have hourly minimums. Here is what that actually means.

Most agencies in San Diego County will not send a caregiver for less than four hours. Some will not go below six. So a family that needs help for one specific hour, the hour with the shower, the hour with the morning medications, the hour between the aide leaving and the daughter arriving, gets told no. Or gets told yes and billed for four.

We staff the hour you need. One hour, three days a week, is a real schedule to us.

That is not a promotion. That is how we are built.

Se habla español.

When you call us, one of the first things we ask is what language your parent is most comfortable in. Not to be polite. Because it decides who we send.

A caregiver who shares your family's language notices more, argues less, and gets a yes on the shower that an English only caregiver would not. She also knows which telenovela is on at 4 and that the Jenga tower is not allowed to fall on Abuela's side of the table.

If your family speaks Spanish at home, tell us. It is not a special request. It is on the intake form.

Closing out September.

This month our caregivers covered overnight shifts in El Cajon, two hour morning visits in Poway, a weekend of respite in Santee so a daughter could go to her own doctor, and one 2am phone call that got answered on the second ring.

That last one matters more than it sounds. Families do not need a promise that someone will call them back during business hours. They need someone to pick up.

On this Patriot Day and the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we honor the memory of those we lost and express our gratitude to the first responders, service members, and everyday heroes who answered the call with strength and selflessness.
