This is where it starts. Then come the baby steps, the first words, the chaos of a little person who takes over your entire life. And these two moms wouldn't have it any other way.

If you have endometriosis, you already know the pain. The kind that stops you in your tracks, that gets brushed off as "just a bad period," that you have learned to push through because no one took it seriously enough to look deeper.
This is what is actually happening inside your body.
Those black dots on this uterine model represent endometrial lesions. Tissue that grows outside the uterus, wrapping around organs, causing chronic inflammation, and in many cases making it much harder to get pregnant. On average it takes seven to ten years to get a diagnosis.
No wonder it hurts.

Last Friday, our Modesto clinic hosted its very first Fertility Friday event, and we are still smiling about it.
Sixteen community members came in for a free AMH blood test, and every single one of them has been scheduled for a complimentary follow-up phone call with Leslie to review their results and talk through what they mean.Whether they are actively trying to conceive, considering egg freezing, or simply curious about their timeline, they now have real information and a real conversation with a fertility specialist waiting for them.
That is what this event was designed to do. Not just to offer a free test, but to open a door.
This day came together because of an incredible team. Leslie hosted the event and kept everything running with warmth and precision. Marissa and Cristal kept the lab going, making sure every blood draw was handled with care and efficiency. And Megan, who came up with the idea for Fertility Friday in the first place and made sure every guest left with a goodie bag worth smiling about.
A heartfelt thank you also to Beth at Mandell's Pharmacy for contributing chocolate chip cookies and bottled water for our guests. It meant more than you know.
To everyone who signed up, showed up, and trusted us with something as personal as their fertility, thank you. We hope to see you again soon.

Every single one of our patients has been here. This moment, this image, this tiny thing holding so much hope. It is easy to get lost in the appointments and the timelines and the waiting. But this is what it is really about. This is what our embryology team is working toward every single day.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Smikle founded Laurel Fertility Care with a simple belief: every person who wants to build a family deserves a doctor who will fight for them. That has always included LGBTQ+ families. It still does.
Over the years we have walked alongside same-sex couples through reciprocal IVF, supported single parents by choice, and been in the room for some of the most important moments of people's lives. Those moments do not belong to one month. But we are glad to have a month to say it out loud.

We want to say something plainly: LGBTQ+ families are not a niche we serve. They are part of who we are and who we have always been, since Dr. Smikle founded this practice in 2005.
Over the years we have helped same-sex couples through reciprocal IVF, supported single parents by choice, and worked with families at every stage of the process. We do not treat inclusivity as a policy. It is just how we practice medicine.
Every member of our team holds a certification in LGBTQ+ inclusion through the Family Equality Council's Rainbow Flags program. That means when you walk through our doors in San Francisco, Oakland, or Modesto, you are working with a team that has done the work to make sure you feel seen.

We could try to explain what she is doing here, but the truth is the team does so much behind the scenes that we would need a whole carousel. What we can tell you is that Marissa is one of the warmest people you will ever meet, and the patients who walk through our Modesto doors are lucky to be in her care.
