This National Intern Day, we’re celebrating the students gaining hands-on experience through Cottage Health’s summer internship program.

We’re grateful for their curiosity, enthusiasm and passion for exploring careers in healthcare. The experiences they gain today are helping prepare them to become the healthcare providers and leaders of tomorrow.

Julia is an ER nurse at Cottage. She’s also a heart attack survivor. When a rare cardiac condition nearly took her life while at work, her colleagues became her care team. She’s now back at Cottage - caring for others.

For 135 years, Cottage has cared for this community.

Stay safe around fireworks this Fourth of July. Fireworks can burn at more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and each year thousands of people go to the emergency room with fireworks-related injuries.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to the professionals and attend a public display conducted by trained pyrotechnicians.

If you are around fireworks, keep children at a safe distance and never hold lit fireworks in your hand.

Wishing you a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Cottage Health has named Helen Matthews, MD, Medical Director of Cottage Ob/Gyn Clinic, where she will help shape the next chapter of women’s healthcare on the Central Coast as part of the growing Cottage Center for Women’s Health.

Ob/Gyn care is an important part of women’s health, supporting patients through preventive care, reproductive health, pregnancy, menopause and gynecologic conditions. In her role, Dr. Matthews will focus on strengthening access to comprehensive Ob/Gyn care and supporting a more connected healthcare experience for women across specialties.

“Women deserve care that meets them where they are,” said Dr. Matthews. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to help strengthen this care for women in our community, care that spans from routine visits to milestones. We are here to help empower women with knowledge about their health at every life stage.”
