Open Mouth Posture: Symptoms vs. Effects

Week 2 of our series on orofacial myofunctional disorders! This week: resting with an open mouth — something so many of us do without even noticing, but it's telling you a lot about what's happening with your muscles and airway.

The Symptoms (what it looks like)

• Lips parted at rest, even when not talking or eating
• Jaw hanging slightly open, especially when tired or focused
• Tongue resting low in the mouth instead of up against the palate
• Breathing through the mouth instead of the nose without noticing

The Effects (what it costs you over time)

• Dries out the mouth, raising the risk of cavities and gum disease
• Makes nasal breathing even harder to re-establish over time
• In kids, can influence jaw growth, facial development, and tooth alignment
• Linked to poor sleep quality and daytime fatigue

A resting mouth should be closed, with lips together and the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth — not hanging open. If you notice this in yourself or your child, it's worth asking why.

That's the root-cause approach we take at Siesta Myo. Curious if open mouth posture is affecting you or your family? Send us a message to book a guidance call.

Wrong muscle. Doing the work. 🚫

When there's muscle dysfunction, the body cheats — other muscles step in to compensate instead of the ones that should be firing. Do that long enough, and you're just reinforcing the wrong pattern.

A lot of the time, it comes down to low tone — the correct muscles just aren't strong enough yet to do their job, so something else picks up the slack. Here's how I build them up so they can. ✅❌

You can find these exercises on YouTube all day. But are you actually doing them correctly? That's where I come in — your accountability partner, making sure it's not just about doing the exercises, but doing them right.

Soft foods, pouches, applesauce packets — they make sense for a lot of reasons. 🌿 Sometimes it's convenience on a busy day. Sometimes it's worry about choking. Both are completely understandable.

But here's the trade-off either way: when everything is soft, the muscles in your child's face never really get a job to do. No biting, no tearing, no real chewing — and those are the exact movements that shape a healthy jaw, airway, and bite as they grow.

This isn't about cutting convenience or taking chances with safety. It's about finding safe ways, as your child is ready, to give those muscles some purpose.

Wondering what that looks like for your child? We're happy to talk it through — link in bio. 📎

👃 vs 👄 — Mouth Breathing: The "Pros" and Cons

Kicking off our weekly series on orofacial myofunctional disorders! First up: mouth breathing — something so common we often don't question it, but your body definitely notices the difference.

The "Pros" (why it happens)
- Feels easier when you're congested or have a stuffy nose
- Can feel necessary during intense exercise
- Requires zero effort to "figure out" — it's the path of least resistance

Here's the thing: these aren't real benefits. They're your body's short-term workaround, not a healthy long-term pattern.

The Cons (what it actually costs you)
- Dry mouth → higher risk of cavities and gum disease
- Skips your nose's natural filtering, humidifying, and warming of air
- Linked to poor sleep quality and sleep disordered breathing
- In kids, can affect facial and jaw development over time
- Daytime fatigue, brain fog, and that "always tired" feeling

Your nose isn't just for smelling — it's a built-in air filter your mouth can't replace. If you or your child breathe through the mouth at rest or during sleep, it's worth asking why.

That's the root-cause approach we take at Siesta Myo. Curious if mouth breathing is affecting you or your family? Send us a message to book a guidance call. 🌊

Straight teeth aren't the goal. A functional airway is. 🦷

The maxilla — your upper jaw — is the tongue's home base. It also forms the floor of the nasal passages and helps hold the airway open.

Too narrow? The tongue has nowhere to go but down and forward. And that changes everything: how your child breathes, swallows, sleeps.

Maxillary expansion isn't about a wider smile. It's about giving the tongue room to do its job — and opening up the airway in the process.

Function first. Form second.

Notice the signs? Let's talk. 💬

“He’ll grow out of it.” “She’s just a mouth breather.” “Kids snore sometimes.”

We hear these a lot — and we get why. It sounds harmless. But when it comes to sleep, breathing, and jaw growth, “wait and see” can quietly cost your child years of healthy development.

Here’s what’s really going on with those “little things”:

😴 Snoring isn’t normal for kids — ever. It’s often a sign their airway is restricted, which can affect how well they sleep and how much oxygen they’re getting overnight.

🦷 Crowded teeth or a narrow palate won’t correct themselves with age. The bones respond best to guidance while a child is still growing — usually before age 8-10. Waiting past that window often means treating a fully formed problem instead of shaping a developing one.

👄 Mouth breathing isn’t just a habit — it’s a pattern. Left alone, it can influence how the face, jaw, and airway develop over time.

None of this means panic. It means paying attention early, while there’s still room to guide growth instead of correct it later.

If any of this sounds familiar, we’d love to take a look. 📲 Book an evaluation — link in bio!
