This international survey found that SLPs across 32 countries frequently support PwA during decision-making conversations, but are less often involved in formally assessing decision-making capacity. Aphasia can mask intact decision-making abilities, making communication support essential to ensure PwA can express their preferences and participate in informed decisions.โฃ

Where exactly is Brocaโ€™s area? ๐Ÿง  ๐Ÿ” โฃ
โฃ
Many of us were trained to think about aphasia through lesion locations and syndrome classifications.โฃ
โฃ
These frameworks remain clinically valuable, but modern language neuroscience increasingly suggests that language breakdown is not explained by isolated regions alone. Language emerges from distributed networks that interact across multiple brain systems.โฃ
โฃ
This shift has important clinical implications, as two patients with the same aphasia label may present very differently.โฃ
โฃ
Understanding the neurobiology of language does not replace behavioral assessment or traditional aphasia classifications. Instead, it can provide a more precise framework for:โฃ
โ†’ Hypothesis generation โฃ
โ†’ Assessment interpretation โฃ
โ†’ Treatment planning โฃ
โ†’ Understanding variability across patients โฃ
โฃ
This new series explores how concepts such as lesion-symptom mapping, network neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and modality-specific processing may help inform modern aphasia care.โฃ
โฃ
My goal is not to make neuroscience feel abstract or inaccessible, but to translate it into clinically meaningful ideas for SLPs who work with aphasia.โฃ
โฃ
Iโ€™m excited to share the series with you all!โฃ

Measuring What Matters in Acalculia ๐Ÿง  ๐Ÿ”ขโฃ

While acalculia is a well-documented consequence of neurological injury, there is a notable paucity of validated patient-reported outcome measures targeting number processing.โฃ
โฃ
Despite the clear impact on daily activities such as managing finances, interpreting time, and following medication schedules, there are few tools designed to capture the clientโ€™s perspective on these challenges.โฃ
โฃ
As a result, clinicians often rely on adapted or adjacent measures to better understand functional impact and guide intervention.โฃ

What tools are you using for measuring the psychosocial impact of acalculia?

Grateful to share that Iโ€™ve earned Board Certification from the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS)!

The process of becoming board certified was a great opportunity for growth and clinical reflection. One of the things I most appreciate about ANCDS is the emphasis on clinical reasoning; focusing not just on what is done, but why it is done. The process pushed me to connect theory, evidence, and clinical decisions in a very intentional way.

It definitely raised the bar for how I think about assessment and treatment with clients, and helped refine my framework for making those decisions in my own practice. Iโ€™m very thankful for the mentorship and support along the way!

If youโ€™re not familiar with ANCDS, itโ€™s absolutely worth exploring. They offer excellent webinars, clinical resources, and research reviews that are really at the forefront of acquired neurologic communication disorders.

Iโ€™m excited to keep building on this experience and look forward to continuing to learn, share, and grow with this great online community of SLPs!
