Together, we create a warm and welcoming community enriching the lives of those we support. At DakotAbilities we work to make that vision come true.

We see an extraordinary vision – a vision of community that actively includes people of all abilities. We join with the others to make our community one in which all people are valued for their talents and individual contributions. We not only introduce people we serve to numerous opportunities, we also educate the community to what it means to be inclusive. Our goals include:

Keeping people safe and ensuring their best possible health
Supporting a person-directed quality of life – self-determination, choice and self-advocacy
Facilitating relationships between people and their community. We recognize that quality of life is not a “thing”, but an on-going process that requires focused efforts over time. DakotAbilities provides services to 140 individuals with developmental disabilities ages 16 to 80 through a variety of service options. These services are available 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. DakotAbilities coordinates programs and services including residential, vocational, medical/therapeutic, recreation, transportation, educational, and case management. Each program is organized through an interdisciplinary process which coordinates evaluation, planning and implementation of developmental training and care according to the specific needs of the individual.

We love collaborating with nonprofits! DakotAbilities collaborates with Foster Closet to sort donations. The people supported by DakotAbilities love contributing to their mission, and in doing so, they are supporting our mission of creating a warm and welcoming community for all.

🍂 12 Days of Thankfulness at DakotAbilities 🍂

This November, we're pausing to give thanks. Over 12 days this month, we'll be celebrating the programs, people, and partners who make DakotAbilities everything we are each day.

Day 1: Music Therapy 🎶

We're kicking things off with our Music Therapy program! Whether it's a familiar melody that sparks a memory, a rhythm that encourages movement, or a shared song that opens the door to connection, music therapy helps our participants build skills, express themselves, and find joy in ways words alone can't capture.

We're especially thankful to the South Dakota Arts Council, whose grant funding makes this meaningful program possible. Their support allows us to bring the power of music into the lives of the people we serve.

That's a wrap on SHIVERS! performances for two standing-room-only crowds. After weeks of practice and preparation, our actors (and employees) feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride. We definitely feel the love and support from all who attended. We also want to thank Theatre 605 Black Hills Playhouse for bringing the play to life.

The Future is Bright at DakotAbilities! ☀️

Our work is big, and our dreams are even bigger. In 2027, we're excited to complete our current accessible housing expansion — and it's going to change lives.

1. Opening our fifth new twin home. Construction is underway on a brand-new twin home on Sioux Falls' east side. When it opens in 2027, this home will give eight adults with disabilities a place to call their own — each with a private bedroom, ensuite bathroom, whirlpool therapy tub, and covered patio. It's built for privacy, dignity, and accessibility, in a neighborhood where residents live alongside friends and neighbors, not apart from them.

2. Reaching 20 accessible homes across Sioux Falls. This home marks the completion of a housing expansion that began in 2024 — and when it's finished, DakotAbilities will have 20 homes throughout our community. It also builds on a milestone we're incredibly proud of: eliminating shared bedrooms altogether, so every single person we support has private, dignified space to call home.

These goals go straight to the heart of our mission: creating a community that includes people of all abilities. Accessible housing isn't just a place to sleep — it's independence, safety, and belonging, all under one roof.
