Today, Spencer Media Group announced the 2026 People’s Choice results, and we are so excited to share that Northwest Iowa Counseling has been voted GOLD in Mental Health Services for the fourth consecutive year!

When we stepped into ownership of Northwest Iowa Counseling, one of our greatest priorities was to honor the integrity of what had already been built- a practice known for high-quality, respected mental health care- while continuing to grow that reach and expand access to services across Northwest Iowa. To see that growth happen while continuing to earn the trust of our community means so much to us.

This recognition belongs to our entire NWIAC team. We are so lucky to work alongside people who genuinely care about the individuals, families, schools, and communities we serve. They put so much of themselves into this work, care deeply about doing it well, and are the reason we feel so much pride in what NWIAC has become. We know whole heartedly this award was earned because of Kristen, Heather, Deb, Melissa M, Tanner, Hannah, Ana, Kaity, Vickie, Melissa B, and Jaime.

And to our clients, community partners, families, friends, and everyone who took the time to vote for us- thank you. We never take your trust in our team for granted.

Four years of ownership.
Four consecutive People’s Choice Gold awards.
🥇🥇🥇🥇

We are incredibly proud of what our team has built together and so thankful to be able to do this work in the communities we call home. Thank you.

We’re so excited to introduce our three master’s-level therapy interns for this school year, Savanna, Kilyn, and Paige!

Supporting future clinicians has always been something we care deeply about. Several of the competent, hard-working, and well-respected clinicians on our team today started as interns here themselves. We love watching the growth happen first hand.

Savanna, Paige, and Kilyn are in the final stretch of their master’s programs and will complete their clinical internships with NWIAC over the next nine months, leading right up to graduation. During that time, they’ll gain hands-on experience while receiving close supervision and support from our team.

We’re excited to have them with us and to watch them grow over the months ahead. Welcome to Northwest Iowa Counseling!

Happy First Day of School! ✏️🍎

Some of our NWIAC staff had the chance to join other community members this morning to welcome Spencer students back with high fives at Johnson Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Spencer Middle School. We loved getting to be part of the excitement of a brand-new school year!

And Tanner's back in the Cherokee School District today, seeing clients for school-based therapy services for the 2026-2027 school year. Kaity is excited to start at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for school-based therapy next week.

Welcome back to school We hope you have a wonderful year ahead!

💛🎗️ Today, our Northwest Iowa Counseling team is .

The little boy behind these shirts is 4-year-old Brody Black, who was diagnosed with Acute T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in April 2026. Since then, Brody and his family have begun a journey no child or family should ever have to face- one that will include years of treatments, appointments, procedures, travel, and time away from the everyday routines most of us take for granted.

For our NWIAC family, Brody’s story is especially close to our hearts. His parents are both Spencer High School alumni and lifelong friends of one of our co-owners, Anne. When there was an opportunity to show this sweet boy and the Black family just how many people are standing behind them, our whole team was in. 💛

Today, we wear these shirts for Brody.

We also wear them for every child fighting cancer, every parent sitting beside a hospital bed, every sibling whose world has changed, and every family walking a road they never expected.

Along with proudly wearing our shirts, Northwest Iowa Counseling will be making a financial donation directly to Brody and his family to help offset some of the unexpected expenses that come with his cancer journey.

And we want Brody’s bravery to reach even further.

In Brody’s honor, NWIAC will also be donating $500 to Building Brave Teams, a nonprofit founded by another Spencer High School alum, Betsey Young, that supports pediatric cancer patients and the families walking alongside them.

One of their newest projects is Bubbles & Bravery Bags. These grab-and-go bags are filled with essential care items that hospital social workers can have available for families who unexpectedly find themselves hospitalized with their child. We love the idea that a donation made in Brody’s honor can bring a little comfort to another family facing an incredibly difficult day.

If you’d like to join us in showing support, there are two wonderful ways to help:

💛 Support Brody & the Black family:
Purchase a shirt through August 31. Proceeds help support the family with expenses related to Brody’s treatment and cancer journey. (Link below)

🎗️ Support other families impacted by childhood cancer:
Consider making a donation directly to Building BrAve Teams and helping them continue surrounding families with practical care, encouragement, and bravery.

And most importantly, help us today to remind one very brave 4-year-old and his family that an entire community is standing beside them.

We’re with you, Brody. 💛

Just a reminder, Northwest Iowa Counseling provides school-based therapy services in the Spencer, Cherokee, and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School Districts!
Students can meet individually with one of our therapists during the school day in a private, confidential space within their school building. This can be especially convenient for working families, parents with younger children at home, or families experiencing transportation barriers.
Our school-based therapists can support students with many of the same concerns addressed in our office, including:
• Worries, fears, and anxiety
• Symptoms of depression
• Peer or friendship concerns
• Bullying
• Grief and loss
• Family changes, such as divorce or separation
• Adjusting to a move, new school, or other life transition
• Self-esteem and emotional regulation
• School stress and difficulty coping
School-based therapy allows students to receive meaningful mental health support in a familiar and accessible setting- without needing to leave school for an appointment.

Very few spots remain with our school-based therapists' schedules before we start our waiting lists, so give us a call today at 712-262-6111 or visit our website at www.nwiac.com to get more information. No referral needed, parents are always welcome to request services for their children.

Happy THREE YEAR Anniversary to Kristen!

It's not an exaggeration to say that Kristen has helped build Northwest Iowa Counseling into what it is today. She took a chance on us when we were a practice of just three therapists, trusted the vision, and has played a significant role in the growth of our practice every step of the way.

Whether she's supporting clients through life's hardest moments, helping keep our clinical standards strong in her role as Compliance Manager, or delivering a perfectly timed sarcastic comment around the office, Kristen leaves an impression wherever she goes. She's thoughtful, incredibly dedicated, fiercely invested in doing things the right way, and never settles for "good enough." Because of that, our clients receive better care, our clinicians have stronger support, and our practice continues to grow.

Kristen, thank you for everything you've poured into NWIAC over the last three years. We appreciate your leadership, your sense of humor, your willingness to challenge us to be better, and the energy you bring to our team.

Happy 3-year anniversary, Kristen. To many more!

Happy ONE YEAR work anniversary to Hannah Pheifer!

Over the last year, Hannah has become a tremendous asset to Northwest Iowa Counseling and has found a passion for working with young children as she continues her training in Synergetic Play Therapy. One of the things that stands out most about Hannah is her genuine compassion. She has a kind heart, a calming presence, and a natural ability to connect with the clients and families she serves. The care she puts into her work is evident in every interaction.

Hannah is truly a gift to Northwest Iowa Counseling, her clients, and her colleagues. We are grateful for the warmth, dedication, and positivity she brings to our team each day. Congratulations on your first year, Hannah! We’re lucky to have you and can’t wait to see where the next year takes you. To many more!

Happy ONE YEAR work anniversary to Tanner Carlson!

Over the past year, Tanner has been an incredible asset to our team. He is known for his strong work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to helping clients create meaningful change in their lives. His dedication to providing quality care and supporting those he works with is evident in everything he does. Tanner is also known for two things that keep a practice running smoothly: staying on top of his documentation and bringing a quick sense of humor to the team.

We’re grateful for all Tanner has contributed to Northwest Iowa Counseling over the past year and look forward to all that’s ahead. Congratulations on one year, Tanner. To many more!
