We don’t expect ourselves to know how to treat every physical ailment. Why should mental health feel any different?

Meet Janie Crow, MS, LAC, a counselor at Gap Relief. 💚

Janie’s reminder: when we have pain or symptoms we don’t know how to treat, we seek help from a trained professional. We deserve that same option when we’re navigating hard things emotionally.

Starting therapy doesn’t mean you’ve failed or aren’t strong enough. It can simply mean you need help finding your way through something difficult.

Her favorite part of counseling is providing a safe space for people to share their stories, unburden their pain, and feel understood in ways they never have before.

Recovery rarely looks like a straight line.

Meet Leah Hanson, Counselor, MS, LPC - one of the amazing humans behind Gap Relief. 👋

For Leah, it’s a gift to witness people bravely reconnect to the fullness of being human. That belief is also reflected in what she wants people to understand about pain, stress, and trauma:

“When working with pain, stress, and trauma, we’re really working with nervous systems - which means we need to learn the language of the body. You can’t think your way out of pain - it must be felt.”

We often think healing should mean hurting less.

But Sarah Daniels offers another way to think about it.

Therapy doesn’t always ask us to push pain away or pretend it didn’t happen. Sometimes it gives us a safe place to make room for what we’ve experienced, understand it with more compassion, and listen for what our story has to teach us.

As Sarah puts it, we can begin to invite our pain to “have a seat at the table” rather than spending all of our energy trying to keep it out.

Healing doesn’t erase the story.

It can help us learn how to hold it differently.

I wish more people understood that a “regulated” nervous system doesn’t mean always being calm, never getting upset, or never feeling overwhelmed.

A healthy nervous system is one that has the flexibility to experience the fullness of life - including joy, grief, anger, fear, excitement, and everything in between - and return to a place of baseline.

Regulation isn’t the absence of activation. It’s the capacity to move through our experiences without getting stuck there.

Therapy can be a gentle invitation to slow down and begin turning toward the parts of us that carry pain, fear, and protection with new compassion and understanding. It can be a journey of welcoming all of you - even the parts you have learned to hide, judge, or push away - home.

You don’t need a “big” trauma to need support.

As Abby, one of our counselors at Gap Relief, shared:

“I wish people knew that you don’t need to have experienced a ‘big’ trauma to need help. Just because you haven’t been through something traumatic doesn’t make your struggles less valid or your pain less real.”

Life can be hard without one defining event.

Sometimes it’s the pressure that never lets up. The relationship that feels heavy. The transition you didn’t expect. The exhaustion you can’t seem to shake.

You don’t have to wait for a crisis - or prove that what you’re carrying is hard enough - to reach out.

Your struggles are valid. Your pain is real. And you are allowed to want support.
