Spending time outside is important. Whether you head to a local park, enjoy a backyard, or even just find a tree to sit by it can help to calm your nervous system. Don’t forget to slow down. With the heat and humidity that we’ve been having make sure that you have plenty to drink, sunscreen, and shade.

People occasionally ask why I bring Ellie to work. Some assume it's simply because I enjoy having my dog with me in the office.

And they're not entirely wrong, I do love the days she's with me.

But there are also mornings when she needs a bath before work, when fitting in a walk between sessions means giving up the chance to eat lunch, read a few pages of a book, or make it to the gym after a long 10-hour day. Bringing a therapy dog isn't always the easiest option.

I do it because I remember what it felt like to be the client.

When I first started therapy in my late teens, I was scared. I was guarded, skeptical, and not at all convinced I wanted to talk to a stranger. My therapist had a black Lab mix. I didn't spend every session petting him. Some days I barely acknowledged he was there.

But his presence mattered.

He softened the room. He made an unfamiliar place feel a little less clinical and a little more human. Somehow, just having him quietly nearby made it easier to let my guard down.

Not everyone connects with dogs in that way, and that's okay. For some people, Ellie is simply another dog sleeping in the corner. But for others, she is the first smile they see after walking through the door. She's a grounding presence during difficult conversations. A comforting distraction when emotions feel overwhelming. A warm body to hug when words are hard to find. Or simply a quiet companion who listens without judgment.

So if you've ever wondered why Ellie is in the office, this is why.

She's here because sometimes healing doesn't begin with the perfect words. Sometimes it begins with feeling just a little safer, a little calmer, and a little less alone.

Ellie and I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer, perhaps doing something fun this holiday weekend…but this heat 🥵.

I am a huge proponent of nature and how positive it can be for your mental health. But, heat is quite the challenge. When the heat goes up it can make us physically ill, it can be dangerous, and it can negatively impact mental health causing people to feel more stressed and agitated.

So think cool thoughts 💭 Ellie and I are reflecting on last years trip to the beach 😉. Be safe this weekend. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Take breaks and make sure that you have places to go where you can cool off and regulate your temperature. Your brain and your body are one. This heat will impact both. So be safe, be healthy, take care of yourself, and enjoy this weekend.

We live in a goal oriented society. Always focused on the next step but the truth is, life’s a journey. Pay attention to the process, be proud of every step you take, and don’t forget to celebrate the in between. It’s not a race.
