Halloween came a little early in our Play Zone!

We celebrated our annual trick or treating event in support of our your patients and families.

Thanks to Spirit Halloween, patients had the chance to pick out Halloween costumes and enjoy festive crafts, games and activities, bringing much-needed joy to those who may not otherwise be able to celebrate a traditional Halloween.

In addition to hosting these annual festivities, Spirit of Children provides year-round support to the hospital’s Child Life department, helping ensure that kids and families receive comfort, care and opportunities for joy beyond the Halloween season.

A big thanks to our Child Life team, volunteers, amazing staff and leaders for supporting this annual favorite event!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the children and families affected by cancer and the health care professionals and researchers working to improve their care.

Childhood cancer is rare, but its impact is significant. In the U.S., an estimated 15,000 children and adolescents under age 20 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2026, and about 1 in 266 children and adolescents will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday. The Pediatric Oncology Clinic, just one aspect of Diamond Children's Medical Center, performs approximately 250 infusions per month. Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer, followed by tumors of the brain and central nervous system.

Advances in research and treatment have dramatically improved survival. Today, about 85% of children diagnosed with cancer survive at least five years, compared with about 58% in the mid-1970s. Many childhood cancer survivors require ongoing care because some treatments can have effects that last long after cancer treatment ends. That makes continued research, compassionate care and survivorship support essential.

Social media is a big part of how teens connect, learn and see the world — but it can also bring pressures that aren’t always easy for parents to spot.

Dr. Catalina Uribe Rini, a licensed psychologist with Banner – University Medicine and assistant clinical professor with University of Arizona Psychiatry Department, recently spoke with KOLD News 13 about social media and teen mental health.

Dr. Uribe Rini encourages families to create healthy boundaries around devices, make time for face-to-face connection and, most importantly, keep the conversation open.

“Approach with curiosity” is a helpful place to start. Listen to what your teen is experiencing, validate their feelings and involve them in decisions about getting additional support when needed.
