Healing doesn't always happen the way you'd expect.

When Buckeye came to MedVet Dayton with a wound on his elbow that wouldn't heal, our Surgery team took an innovative approach. To help encourage healthy tissue growth, they used sterilized fish skin beneath his bandages as part of his treatment.

Recovery took time, but Buckeye's family was with him every step of the way. From months of bandage changes to keeping him comfortable in his collection of custom front-leg "pants," their dedication played a huge role in his success.

Today, Buckeye's wound has fully healed, leaving behind only a small scar and a remarkable story of teamwork, patience, and perseverance. 💙

A new school year brings new opportunities to learn, reconnect and grow.

To all the veterinary students heading back to campus: welcome back! Veterinary school is a challenging journey, and having a strong support network of friends, classmates, mentors and colleagues can make all the difference along the way.

As you head into another year of lectures, labs, clinical experiences and exams, remember to make space for the learning that happens beyond the score. The knowledge, relationships and experiences you gain along the way will stay with you long after graduation.

Ash had already been through one major emergency when he arrived at MedVet Lexington, but his journey wasn't over yet.

After surgery for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening condition where a dog's stomach fills with gas and twists, Ash's family veterinarian noticed signs of complications and referred him to our 24/7 hospital for advanced monitoring.

Air was leaking into the space around Ash's lungs, making it difficult for him to breathe. Our team initially relieved the pressure by carefully removing the trapped air with a needle, but when the air continued to build up, they performed a specialized procedure using Ash's own blood to create a natural seal over the leak, allowing his lung to heal.

Just a few days later, Ash was back home breathing comfortably, eating well, and continuing his recovery. 💙

Stories like Ash's are a reminder of how collaboration between family veterinarians and emergency and specialty teams can help pets receive the advanced care they need when unexpected complications arise.

Sometimes the smallest objects can cause the biggest problems.

When Lillie, a French Bulldog, was referred to MedVet Lexington, she was being treated for pneumonia and was also showing signs of back pain and difficulty walking. Our team quickly discovered she had swallowed a foreign object.

The culprit? A GMC key ring. 🚙

Using a minimally invasive endoscope, our team was able to remove the key ring without surgery. Almost immediately, Lillie's back pain resolved and she was walking comfortably again. After an overnight stay, she was able to head home feeling much more like herself.

If you think your pet has swallowed something they shouldn't, don't wait to contact your veterinarian. Quick treatment can make all the difference.

Lottie's family never imagined a piece of thread could turn into a life-threatening emergency.

After vomiting, acting lethargic, and losing her appetite, Lottie was referred to MedVet Lexington, where our team found that she'd swallowed thread that had traveled from her stomach into her intestines.

This created what's known as a linear foreign body. Unlike many swallowed objects, thread can become anchored while the intestines bunch up around it, potentially causing serious damage if not treated quickly.

Lottie underwent emergency surgery, and thanks to the quick response of her family veterinarian and the collaboration between our team, she recovered well after a short stay in the hospital. 🫶

We’re pleased to welcome Dr. Jose Guerrero Cota to MedVet Vancouver and introduce a new specialty service: in-hospital Radiology, including outpatient ultrasound options for pets in our community.

Through the addition of outpatient ultrasound services, referring veterinarians will have greater access to advanced imaging while helping pets and their families avoid the stress of traveling farther for specialized diagnostics.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Guerrero Cota enjoys visiting museums, gardening, learning about Indigenous art and culture, and exploring his interests in neurophysiology and psychology. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and their cats and dog.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Guerrero Cota and expand access to advanced diagnostic services for pets and veterinary teams throughout the Vancouver community.

Bono may be training to protect his community, but one hot training day, he needed a team looking out for him.

While training to become a K9 for the Hocking County Sheriff's Office, Bono developed heatstroke, a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a dog's body temperature rises to dangerous levels and they can no longer cool themselves down. His trainers acted quickly by cooling him and bringing him straight to MedVet Hilliard.

After receiving emergency treatment, Bono made an excellent recovery. And despite his tough-on-the-job reputation, this future K9 officer was nothing but a sweetheart during his stay, even giving Dr. Emily Fagundo a few thank-you kisses. 😊

We're so glad Bono is back on his paws and continuing his training to serve his community.

Big dog. Even bigger personality.

When 1-year-old Hank, a 163 pound Great Dane, was brought to MedVet Phoenix, he needed surgery to remove several items he had swallowed, including a bra, kitchen towel, and a few other household items. 🫣 Thankfully, everything went well, and Hank recovered from his surgery to remove the objects like a champ!

While he may be larger than life, Hank proved to be the sweetest patient. He happily accepted plenty of love from our team and, true to Great Dane form, shared a little drool with anyone nearby. Let's just say our scrubs doubled as napkins. 😄

And can we all agree his dinosaur recovery suit is the perfect finishing touch?

Our Ophthalmology team at MedVet Columbus is currently enrolling dogs for a study for the treatment of Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), also known as “dry eye.”

Signs of dry eye may include:
▪️Painful, red, irritated eyes
▪️Squinting, excessive blinking, holding the eyes shut
▪️Yellowish, mucus-like discharge from the eye

If you feel your dog may be a candidate for the study, talk to your family veterinarian who may refer you to Dr. Terah Webb at MedVet Columbus.
