A craving can feel like it hits all at once. It doesn't. It moves through six stages, and each one gives you a chance to step in.
1. Trigger. You meet a cue: a person, a place, a feeling, a song. Walk away, distract yourself, or call someone.
2. Activation. Your emotional brain fires first and the craving starts to build. Name it: "This is a craving." Then breathe.
3. Automatic thinking. The addictive voice starts talking: "Just once." "You deserve it." Challenge it. Remember the consequences. Tell someone.
4. The peak. This is the hardest part. It usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes. Check in with yourself: Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired? Then call your accountability person now.
5. The decision. The window of choice is narrow, but it's there. Use the plan you made before the craving came, and leave the situation.
6. Resolution. The craving passes, or you use. Either way, talk it through and learn from it.
The window gets smaller with every stage. At the peak, the thinking part of your brain is mostly offline, so you can't reason your way out. You have to plan your way out before the craving arrives. Stage 1 is your best chance.
