FROM PATIENT TO INNOVATOR

Melissa became involved in diabetes technology, advocacy and research, focusing on tools that can help people living with Type 1 diabetes manage their condition more effectively.

Melissa has also contributed to work highlighting the importance of integrating mental health and diabetes care — recognising that living with diabetes affects much more than glucose levels.

Her more recent work has focused on helping people understand and use CGM information through structured education and digital tools.

Elizabeth Hughes — The young woman who became a symbol of hope

Elizabeth Hughes wasn't a scientist or doctor. She was a young girl diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at a time when the disease was essentially a death sentence.

In 1922, when she was 14, Elizabeth travelled to Toronto and became one of the first people to receive insulin treatment. She responded dramatically and went on to live for decades after her diagnosis.

He has described receiving the diagnosis as a wake-up call that prompted him to prioritize his health—not just for himself, but for his family.

Making lifestyle changes

Rather than looking for a quick fix, Billy focused on building healthier daily habits. His approach included:

• Eating a more balanced diet with better portion control.
• Becoming more physically active.
• Working closely with his healthcare team.
• Monitoring his blood glucose regularly.
• Staying consistent rather than striving for perfection.

He has repeatedly emphasized that managing diabetes is an ongoing journey, not a one-time event.
