EMDR works by helping the brain's natural memory-processing system integrate traumatic experiences so they no longer feel like a current danger. urrent research suggests EMDR involves changes across several brain regions, particularly:
The amygdala (reduced fear response)
The hippocampus (better placing memories in the past)
The prefrontal cortex (improved emotional control)

The Butterfly Hug is a gentle, self-administered grounding technique that uses bilateral stimulation (alternating left-to-right tapping) to rapidly reduce emotional overwhelm, calm the nervous system, and restore a sense of safety. It was developed in 1998 by Lucina Artigas and Dr Ignacio Jarero.

EMDR therapy is a treatment approach that can reduce emotional pain linked to the past.
Clients experience:
• Less or no intense sadness, fear, shame, guilt, anger, or panic
• Less or no emotional overwhelm when reminded of difficult experiences
• Feeling calmer, steadier, and more in control

Two memory systems (working independently)
What you’re experiencing is the difference between:
•Explicit memory
images, scenes, stories
“I remember this happening”
•Implicit memory
body feeling
emotional tone
sense of familiarity
This falls under implicit memory.

Implicit memory does not need images to be activated. The Brian, recognises the state, not the event.

The emotion is real, even if the “memory” is not clearly defined. The image is not recalled in the memory but the sense is there. The “sense” can be present without a clear image or narrative.

EMDR therapy operates through mechanisms comparable to the natural REM sleep cycles of the brain. As the brain processes daily experiences during sleep, EMDR applies bilateral stimulation to facilitate the integration of traumatic memories that remain unprocessed. Research indicates a link between eye movements and memory consolidation, supporting ongoing improvements in therapeutic effectiveness.

In trauma treatment, particularly in EMDR Therapy, clients require a space and time to experience belonging and control. The therapeutic relationship functions as a regulatory system in which safety is not assumed but constructed through attuned interaction.,
For safety and adequacy to emerge, practitioners must establish a genuine quality of warmth combined with professional closeness. This reduces relational mismatch, minimises resistance, and lowers early dropout risk.
Within this frame, clients experience both safety and control alongside responsibility. This supports the development of agency, allowing clients to remain in charge of their internal processes throughout treatment rather than becoming passive recipients of treatment.

My approach is direct, clinically grounded, and assessment-focused. I prioritise structure, formulation, and the identification of underlying mechanisms rather than surface-level coping strategies or supportive conversation.

The work begins with a thorough assessment of symptoms and presentation, followed by a structured, trauma-focused treatment process. This provides clarity, containment, and a clear direction for intervention.

This approach is suited to individuals seeking depth rather than quick solutions, those who are open to assessment, can engage in paced work, and are willing to explore and address underlying patterns in a structured way.
