Trauma isn’t always comfortable to talk about. In fact, it shouldn’t be. It asks us to sit with difficult truths, challenge long-held assumptions, and understand the lasting impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal peoples, families and communities.
But alongside these truths, we also explored something equally important but not so often highlighted, our strengths.
We reflected on the protective factors that have carried Aboriginal people through generations: culture, connection, family, identity, community, storytelling, resistance and the unwavering determination to survive despite the many tricks and tactics of colonisation designed to disconnect us from who we are.
Healing begins when we understand not only what has happened, but also what has kept us strong. A big thank you to Adelaide PHN for once again trusting Wonky Lines Counselling to hold a space where participants can lean into the uncomfortable moments, ask courageous questions, reflect deeply, and continue growing in their understanding and practice.
Thank you also to Kura Yerlo Inc for so generously hosting us (on late notice) and for creating such a welcoming space for learning, connection and conversation.
To everyone who attended I want to thank you for your openness, your vulnerability, and your willingness to become part of one another’s stories. Every conversation like this creates healing.
