🚽 "I need to go!"... and suddenly it's an emergency.

Sound familiar?

Some children don't recognise they need the toilet until the very last moment. It's not always because they're distracted or avoiding the toiletβ€”it can simply be that they're still learning to recognise and respond to their body's signals.

Like any developmental skill, this takes time, practice and the right support.

Understanding what's happening behind the behaviour is the first step towards helping your child feel more confident and successful with toileting.

When children understand what happens inside their body, they're often more confident and motivated to use the toilet. Books and videos can turn tricky concepts into fun, memorable learning experiences.

Try these ideas:
βœ”οΈ Read books that explain how food becomes poo
βœ”οΈ Watch age appropriate videos together and talk about what happens inside the body
βœ”οΈ Encourage children to ask questions about their tummy and toilet
βœ”οΈ Link what they're learning to everyday toilet routines
βœ”οΈ Keep the conversations positive, simple, and pressure free

Understanding the body is an important step towards building confidence and independence with toileting. πŸ’›

πŸ¦ πŸ’© Looking for something fun to do with the kids this weekend?

If you're in Newcastle, the HMRI Poo Palace at the Hunter Science Festival is a fantastic way to learn about the digestive system through hands-on play.

Children can walk through a giant inflatable digestive system and discover what happens to food as it travels through the bodyβ€”from the first bite all the way to... well, you know! 🚽

At Kids That Go, we're all about making conversations around digestion, bowel health and toileting less awkward and more engaging. Events like this are a great way to spark curiosity and help children better understand how their bodies work.

Books can be a simple but powerful way to make toileting feel familiar and fun. Stories help children understand what happens in the bathroom, build confidence, and create positive conversations without pressure.

Try reading together:
βœ”οΈ Before starting toilet learning
βœ”οΈ During your bedtime routine
βœ”οΈ Before toilet practice
βœ”οΈ Let your child choose a favourite story
βœ”οΈ Pause to chat about what the characters are doing

A great book can turn curiosity into confidence, one page at a time. πŸ“šπŸ’›
