Managing Your First NDIS Plan:
Understanding Your Options before your first planning meeting.
Receiving your first NDIS plan is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming. One of the first decisions you'll need to make is how your plan will be managed.
The good news is that there isn't a "right" or "wrong" choice. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers three different ways to manage your funding, and you can even choose a combination of these options if it suits your needs.
Let's explore each option.
1️⃣ Option 1: Self-Managed 🧾
If you choose to self-manage your NDIS funding, you (or your nominee or representative) are responsible for managing your NDIS budget.
This means you'll:
* Pay your providers.
* Keep invoices and financial records.
* Monitor your budget.
* Ensure your funding is only used for supports that align with your NDIS plan.
Self-management can provide the flexibility and increase choice in providers, making it ideal for people who feel confident managing finances and administration. It is a common misconception that you must pay the provider from your own pocket prior to claiming the funds from your plan. Most (not all) providers will allow a strict payment term on invoices.
Self-management may suit you if:
* You enjoy being organised.
* You're comfortable managing invoices and budgets.
* You want maximum flexibility over how you use your funding.
---
2️⃣ Option 2: Plan Managed 👩🏫
Plan management means you choose a NDIS registered Plan Manager to handle the financial administration of your NDIS plan.
Your Plan Manager will:
* Pay your providers.
* Process invoices.
* Keep financial records.
* Provide regular budget reports.
* Help you understand your funding and build your confidence managing your NDIS plan.
One of the biggest benefits is that you can generally use both registered and unregistered providers, giving you greater choice while someone else takes care of claiming and paying the invoices.
Importantly, the NDIS provides separate funding to pay for your Plan Manager, so this does NOT reduce the funding available for your supports.
Plan management may suit you if:
* You want flexibility without the financial administration.
* You'd like someone to help monitor your budget.
* You prefer support understanding your NDIS funding.
---
3️⃣ Option 3: NDIA-Managed (Agency Managed)
A
With NDIA-managed funding (sometimes called Agency Managed), your provider requests payments directly from the NDIA after your service is received, the agency then pays your providers.
If you choose this option, you'll only be able to use NDIS registered providers for the supports funded through the NDIA-managed parts of your plan.
NDIA management may suit you if:
* You'd prefer the NDIA to manage provider payments.
* You're happy using registered NDIS providers.

⁉️Did you know you can have a mix of different management types? ⁉️
Many people don't realise that your plan doesn't have to be managed entirely one way.
The NDIS allows you to use different management options for different support budgets. For example, you might choose to self-manage one budget while having another budget plan managed.
---
⁉️ Can You Change Later? ⁉️
Absolutely.
If your circumstances change, or you decide another management option would suit you better, you can ask the NDIA to change how your plan is managed—you don't necessarily have to wait until your next plan reassessment.
---
Remember…
No matter how your funding is managed, you are still responsible for ensuring your NDIS funding is only used for supports that are in line with your plan and for keeping an eye on your available budget. The NDIS recommends regularly checking your funding through the participant portal or the my NDIS app.
Final Thoughts…
Choosing how to manage your first NDIS plan is an important decision, but it doesn't have to be permanent. Think about how involved you'd like to be in the financial side of your plan, how confident you feel managing budgets, and whether you'd benefit from extra support.
The best option is the one that helps you get the most from your NDIS funding while giving you confidence and control over your supports.
