Aged 85 years

With deep sadness and with heartfelt gratitude for the many years shared with him, we announce the peaceful passing of Robert James Verdon, affectionately known as Rob.

Late of Goondiwindi and formerly of Wollongong, New South Wales, Rob passed away gently in his sleep on Sunday, 30 August 2026.

Rob was the cherished husband and best friend of his devoted wife, Fiona; a much-loved brother to Joan; and a dearly loved father to Grant, Nicole and Lisa. He was also a treasured father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose place within his family will always be held with great love.

Family and friends are warmly invited to come together to honour Rob, share treasured memories and celebrate the life he lived on:

It was our privilege to care for and say farewell to the late Lorna May Light, a remarkable lady who lived a full life of 93 years.

In her younger years, Lorna called Longreach home. She was never afraid of hard work, spending many years cooking in shearing sheds and pubs. Remembered as a wonderful cook who could prepare a hearty meal, Lorna always remained every inch a lady and took great pride in dressing beautifully.

Lorna was deeply loved by her community. Her natural grace and warm demeanour made everyone who knew her feel welcome and at home in her company.

She shared an especially precious bond with her daughter, Tania. Their relationship was filled with deep love, tenderness and devotion, a beautiful connection between a mother and daughter that will remain long after their parting. To Tania, she was affectionately known as her beloved “Mumma Bear.”

Lorna was farewelled with a Catholic service at the Toowoomba Garden of Remembrance, where those gathered reflected upon her strength, generosity, wisdom and the happiness she brought into the lives of others.

Rest peacefully, Lorna. A hardworking country woman, a true lady, a treasured member of her community and a deeply loved mother whose memory will forever be held close.

In Loving Memory of Michael John Moggs 🖤💛❤️

Cultural Notice: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are respectfully advised that this post contains the name and image of a person who has passed away. Shared with the greatest respect for Michael, his family, his people, culture and Country.

On Thursday, 20 August, family and friends gathered on Bigambul Country in Goondiwindi to farewell a proud Bigambul man, Michael John Moggs.

Michael was a quiet, hardworking man whose life was deeply connected to his family and the country he called home. For close to forty years, much of his working life was spent around the shearing sheds, working alongside his brothers Kevin and Steven. He was a man who simply got on with the job.

Away from work, Michael found happiness in life's simple pleasures — a fishing line by the river, a game of darts, a cold beer, gardening and, later in life, discovering a wonderful talent for painting. His much-loved emu artwork became a beautiful and very personal part of his final farewell.

Michael was surrounded on his final journey by the people, music, stories and symbols that reflected the life he had lived. His family and friends gathered at the Goondiwindi Lawn Cemetery to remember him, share their memories and return him gently to Country.

As Michael was laid to rest, we said our final words:

You have closed your eyes for the last time, Michael.
We have laid you to rest on Country.
Now it is time to enter the Dreaming,
where your ancestors are waiting to walk beside you.

Rest peacefully, Michael.

Matthew was the much-loved son of Karlene and Matthew, and shared his life surrounded by his siblings, partner, extended family and, most importantly, the children he adored.

A carefree soul who loved to live life to the fullest, Matthew was fiercely connected to those he called family and proud of his culture, his people and where he came from.

His life was filled with family, mates, laughter, music and plenty of memories, some good, some wild, and undoubtedly some that will continue to be told for many years to come.

Matthew's journey ended far too young, but his story remains part of the story of his family. His children will carry a part of him forward, and his name and memory will remain with the people who loved him.

Rest peacefully, Matthew. May your journey into the Dreaming see you surrounded by your ancestors, forever connected to your people and Country. 🧡

Remembering Edgar “Ross” Montgomery, The Big Man in the Little Bubble 🚌🤍

There are some people who quietly become part of the fabric of a small community, and Ross Montgomery was one of those people.

Ross was a hard-working, kind-hearted country man and a devoted family man. He loved his family deeply: his beloved wife Robyn, with whom he is now reunited; his children Michael and Mary; their partners; his grandchildren Madison, Kate, Beau and Sophie; and the extended family and friends who were such an important part of his life.

For many people throughout Thallon and the surrounding district, however, Ross will also be remembered from behind the wheel of his much-loved little rainbow school bus.

For years, Ross was the Thallon school bus driver. It was a job he genuinely loved.

In a remote community, a school bus can become so much more than transport for children to and from school. That little bus travelled beyond the school run, helping connect people with community events and occasions and playing its own small but important part in keeping people connected across the distances of country life.

And sitting proudly behind the wheel was Ross, the big man in the little bubble.

Generations of local children and families came to know that familiar bus and the familiar man driving it. Ross wasn't simply doing a job; he was providing a service that mattered to his community.

Ross passed away peacefully in his sleep on 13 July 2026, with loved ones by his side. His final resting place is at Thallon Cemetery, back in the community that formed such an important part of his life.

Ross will be remembered as a gentle giant, a hard worker, a loyal mate, a devoted family man and a familiar face behind the wheel of that little rainbow bus.

Some people leave their mark in grand ways. Others do it simply by turning up, doing the job, caring for their family and quietly being there for their community year after year.

Thank you for the miles, Ross.

Remembering Jason “Piggy” Duncan 🤍

Jason Dean Duncan, fondly known to almost everyone as “Piggy,” was a much-loved man whose passing has left an enormous hole in the lives of his family, friends and communities.

Growing up in Toomelah before later making St George his home, Piggy was a familiar face and a man who was genuinely well liked by those who knew him. He worked with Balonne Shire Council, but the most important part of Jason's world was always his family.

Jason deeply adored his partner Tracey and his children Kintarly, Jason, Tianka, Skye, Kyarnna and Jairra. They were his family, his pride and his heart; and that love was returned to him in equal measure. They absolutely adored their Piggy.

And then there was his other great passion - the Manly Sea Eagles.

Maroon and white were proudly woven throughout Jason's funeral service. On that day, however, those colours represented something far greater than his beloved NRL team. They were Piggy's colours. They surrounded his family and friends as they gathered to honour the man behind the nickname and say goodbye to someone they loved so very much.

Jason's passing on 11 July 2026, aged only 52, shattered his family. No one was ready to lose him.

While his life ended far too soon, Piggy will live on through his family, the stories that will continue to be told, the laughter he shared, the friendships he made and the many memories left behind.

For those who had the privilege of knowing him, there will only ever be one Piggy.

Rest peacefully, Jason. You were loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. 🤍

MICHAEL JOHN “MICK” MOGGS
A strong and proud Bigambul man, late of Goondiwindi, Mick passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and the staff at Kaloma Home for the Aged, on Saturday, 8 August 2026.

Much-loved son of Sam and Joan (both deceased).
Loving father of Colin.
Treasured brother of Barbara, Kevin (deceased), Val, Priscilla, Allan (deceased), Cheryl, Di and Steven.
Mick was a dearly loved uncle to his many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family, including Justin & Josephine, his cousins and mates who love and miss him, and by all those who knew and respected him.

Mick will be remembered with great affection as a proud Bigambul man whose life, story and enduring connection to family, Country and community will continue to be honoured.

Family and friends are warmly invited to come together to celebrate Mick’s life and lay him to rest on Thursday, 20 August 2026, commencing at 12 noon, with a graveside farewell at the Goondiwindi Lawn Cemetery.

Affectionately known as “Mattboy”.

Late of Moree and formerly of Newcastle, New South Wales, on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, at just 27 years young, Matthew began a journey beyond our sight, leaving treasured memories, an enduring love and a place in his family’s hearts that will forever be his.

Cherished son of Karlene Whitton and Matthew Roberts Snr.
Much-loved grandson of Lance Snr. and Ethel (Sonya, dec.) Whitton, John Roberts (dec.), and Amy and Silver Mancini (both dec.).
Treasured partner of Kiara.
A devoted and loving father to his precious babies, Kaylirah, Mattahkai and Marqis & Jakowah.
Adored brother of Shelleana, Nigel (dec.), Amy (dec.), Sharlee, Mattison and Matterlynn.
Beloved nephew of his proud aunts and uncles: Lance and Rose, Alma and Leon, Lizzy and Tim, Karen and Raymond, Trevor, Harold and Mark.

Matthew will also be deeply missed by the extended Whitton, Cutmore, Newman, Pegus, Hippi, Whightman, Pitt, Stanley, Nichols, Brown, Mancini, Mercy, Walker and Randall families.

Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Matthew’s life on Friday, 14 August 2026, commencing at 2.00 pm at All Saints Anglican Church, 101 Boston Street, Moree.
Following the service, Matthew will be peacefully laid to rest alongside his much-loved and deeply missed brother, Nigel, at Moree Cemetery, 51 Carbeen Street, Moree.

In honour of Matthew’s great love for the NRL’s Wests Tigers, family and friends are encouraged to wear a touch of orange.
