📚 Book Week at The Willow Tree Clinic! 📚

What an exciting week it will be at The Willow Tree Clinic!

We're celebrating Book Week on Wednesday, 26th August, and we'd love for everyone to join in the fun by dressing up as their favourite book character.

Both staff and clients are invited to participate, and there will even be a prize for the best-dressed costume!

Books play a vital role in children's learning and development. Reading together creates meaningful opportunities for shared engagement, strengthens relationships, and supports the development of language, communication, imagination, and early literacy skills. Whether you're reading a favourite story at home or exploring a new adventure together, every book helps build a strong foundation for learning.

Thank you for helping us celebrate the joy of reading, we can't wait to see everyone's creative costumes!

📚 Fun Fact: Did you know that Children's Book Week has been celebrated in Australia since 1945? It was established to promote a love of reading and celebrate Australian children's literature, inspiring generations of young readers and supporting Australian authors and illustrators.

Ever wondered why your therapist keeps reminding you to practise your skills at home, school or in the clinic… or why progress can feel slow even when you know what you want to do but still struggle to do it?

The answer is neuroplasticity.
Every time you think, feel, say or do something, your brain sends chemicals across synapses, sending messages to and from the brain and body. The ones we do the most form the strongest connections and become your “default settings”!

Trying something new builds brand-new connections, as shown in the video. Neurons literally reach out to connect with the rest of your brain. But new connections take time, repetition and patience to grow stronger.

Mistakes, new skills and tricky moments can feel uncomfortable, but they’re also signs your brain is learning in real time. That’s the magic of neuroplasticity.

Make sure to ask your clinician about this in your next session to learn more!!

✨ Meet Abbey ✨
I’ve been a speech pathologist for six years, working across both not‑for‑profit and private practice in the paediatric space. I’m drawn to this work because communication is such a core part of connection, and I love helping kids and families feel understood, communicate authentically, and feel confident in who they are.🗣️

Outside of work, you’ll usually find me walking my dog, sipping coffee at the beach, or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen.🐾☕👩‍🍳

One of my favourite parts of working at TWTC is building strong, meaningful connections with children and their families. I feel lucky to be part of a team that shares those same values and genuinely cares about the work we do.🚸

When a child is labelled “defiant,” it can feel heavy to hear. 💚
But often, it’s not naughtiness - it’s overwhelm, stress, or big feelings bubbling over.

Sometimes “defiance” is really:
• anxiety or exhaustion
• sensory overload
• demands feeling too big
• struggling to be understood

A gentle reframe:
Instead of “Why won’t my child…,” try “What is my child communicating right now?”

No blame. No shame.
With the right support, things get easier over time. 🌱
